Milestones
| |
Don Hodgen asks prayers for his mother, who faces a lengthy recovery following a car accident.
In this space we celebrate moments and milestones in the lives of members of the community. So, if you have a birthday, an anniversary, a graduation, a promotion, a retirement, or other milestone to celebrate send me a note and we'll shout it out right here.
Likewise, if you have a prayer concern that you'd like lifted up in the prayer lives of the the community, let me know and we'll list that here, as well.

| Special Offerings | |
This Sunday we will receive the annual Christmas Joy offering that supports the historic racial-ethnic Presbyterian colleges, and the Presbyterian Board of Pensions work to support the families of retired church professionals in need.
Following worship this Sunday we'll continue the spirit of giving as we make bag meals for A-SPAN.
Monday is our night to bag groceries for AFAC. Come and give! Meet up at 7:00 at AFAC.
If you're looking for additional places to give this season, the local and national More Light Presbyterians would be grateful, as would People of Faith for Equality Virginia. Each of these organizations is working to make the world a more welcoming place for all of God's children.

The Spirit of Giving
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse | December. 2011
|
Greetings!
As I say in worship almost every week, we have been given so much in this good place and it is our pleasure to be able to return a bit of what we have been given. What else is Christmas about if not that. We have been given the gift of God's presence in the midst of human history. How can we keep from giving? Opportunities to give abound, and else where in this e-blast you'll find some opportunities to give of you time and your treasure including the annual Christmas Joy Offering, the local More Light Presbyterians, AFAC, A-SPAN and others. In the same spirit, in this season, how can we keep from singing? Indeed, carols of the season make Christmas for many folks. This Sunday during worship we'll celebrate the songs of the season beginning with Mary's Song and continuing to our songs. Come and worship! PS: The Christmas Eve service of lessons and carols includes many reading opportunities. If you can be part of that service, please send me a note (and I'll send you a reading!)

Task Force on Staff Design Begins Its Work
Following its October planning retreat, session called six CPC members (Karen Kimmel (chair), Gordon Hawthorne, Grant Mandsager, Dave Norman, Peg True and Travis Reindl (session liaison)) to recommend a ministry and personnel model best aligned with assuring CPC's continued vitality and its capacity to fulfill its mission within Arlington County, Northern Virginia, and throughout the National Capital Presbytery as a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse church that is growing and spreading the gospel. As we begin this process, it will be important to place this discernment in the context of CPC's journey over the last few years and the versions of ministry models under which CPC has functioned with Madeline Jervis, Laura Cunningham, and now David Ensign. Given today's reality, we will now consider other ministry and staffing models that combine both paid and volunteer staff configured to: a) support our vital mission; b) fully engage David's gifts in the work of the church yet address his aspirations to more clearly focus his ministry in a meaningful way; and c) support the ability of members to contribute in a meaningful but reasonable way without burning out. This process will be done in full transparency and dialogue with the session and congregation. The task force began its work this month with an organizational meeting. Next month the group will meet with representatives of National Capital Presbytery to gather information about staffing models of other small congregations in the Presbytery. The group is also gathering information from other similarly situated congregations from other denominations. The group will report its findings to session at its January meeting and make an interim report to the congregation at the January 29 congregational meeting. The group plans to make recommendations to session in February and anticipates a called congregational meeting in March to present a final report. This report is condensed from a longer version that will be distributed at church this Sunday, posted on the bulletin board outside the church office, and made available to anyone who requests it.

Stewardship Season Update; We're Getting Closer
Our annual pledge drive continues through this month. Five or so years ago session endorsed the findings of a mission discernment group that named working toward new models of ministry for the church of the third millennium as one of CPC's callings. As you see from the article above, we are preparing for some key changes that, if we make them well, will bring us closer to that goal. In other words, the staffing changes we are considering present an exciting opportunity to imagine what the Next Church might look like. All of this work depends upon your incredible generosity. In the few weeks of our pledge drive we have received 21 pledges totaling $56,900, toward a 2012 goal of $85,000. It's an excellent start, and we give a huge thanks to every one who has responded to the invitation to make a financial commitment to the mission and ministry at Clarendon. We'll use this spot in the coming weeks to keep you posted on progress. In the meanwhile, please bring your pledge card to church Sunday and drop it in the offering plate or use the return mail card and send it to church. Every pledge matters greatly to our common work, and every pledge is deeply appreciated.

Dance, Dance, Dance!
Saturday, December 17, CPC will host a dance party for the Gay-Straight Alliances of Wakefield and Washington & Lee High Schools. We're feeding and hosting several dozen teenagers that evening from 7:00 - 10:00, and can use your help. Cheryl and Clark will be whipping up pizzas, and we're happy to accept any snack or soft drink donations. We'd also love to have some grown ups on hand. So, if you enjoy spending time with teenagers, please join the party! A year or so ago some polling outfit discovered that a majority of teenagers know what the word "abomination" means. This is an opportunity for a faith community to teach something else to the young people of our community.

Special Services and Special Times for the Holidays
Christmas Eve we gather at 7:30 for our traditional service of lessons and carols and we tell the story of Christmas and sing the songs of the season. We close the service in candle light as we walk out in to the silent and holy night. The service includes many worship leadership opportunities, so if you would like to read or lead parts of the liturgy, please send me a note. Christmas morning, Sunday, Dec. 25, we'll gather for a service more casual than most, and one hour later than usual, too. We'll begin at 11:00 a.m., and invite you to come in whatever is most comfortable for you on Christmas morning. Sweats, PJs, and robes are welcome. Some of us may wind up sitting on the floor around the Christmas tree. We'll share the Christmas stories, sing carols, and talk about the gifts we have received that have brought us the deepest joy. Feel free to bring them along for show and tell! Begin the New Year in Worship!New Year's Day also falls on Sunday this season, and we'll acknowledge the reality that many folks will stay up late December 31 to ring in the new year so worship on Sunday, January 1, will also begin at 11:00 a.m.
