Milestones

Don Hodgen asks prayers for his mother, who faces a lengthy recovery following a car accident.

Ron Bookbinder gives thanks that his Great Aunt Francie Huber has returned to her home to continue recovering from a fall.

Happy birthday to Lenka Bauman, who just turned 6, and to her dad, Hans, we marks another year this Tuesday. Happy birthday to Dr. David Pitts, who celebrates his natal day Dec. 1!

In this space we celebrate moments and milestones in the lives of members of the community. So, if you have a birthday, an anniversary, a graduation, a promotion, a retirement, or other milestone to celebrate send me a note and we'll shout it out right here.

Likewise, if you have a prayer concern that you'd like lifted up in the prayer lives of the the community, let me know and we'll list that here, as well.

Beginning the Season
Of Light
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse

November.2011
Greetings!
cross

This Sunday we begin the season of Advent with a litany of light.

Advent means coming. (We get our word from the Latin "adventus," which means "coming.") For the next four weeks we will be about the business of preparing for the coming again of Christ into our lives.

We'll light the candles one week at a time, and watch them burn down slowly over four Sundays. We'll also deck the halls and create a space of welcome in the church building even as we prepare way in our hearts.

The rhythm of this season beats in all of our lives whether or not we choose to focus on the spiritual beat at its heart. Today is Black Friday and marks the beginning of the consumer frenzy has come to define Christmas in America. Lots of our neighbors are taking advantage of the beautiful weather to string lights this weekend. There are radio stations already playing nothing but Christmas carols.

If you want to focus on the spiritual beat at the heart of the season there are plenty of ways to do so, and lots of resources to help.

But the simplest way to begin is to join the community gathered in worship this Sunday.

Come. Let us worship.

CPC Puts the Giving in Thanksgiving!

ASPAN feeding
Michael and Celeste Feeding the Hungry

The Clarendon crew hit the streets late on Thanksgiving Day to help feed Arlington's hungry with the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network.

Dave Norman headed up the crew that included Dave's nephew Ethan, Wes MacAdam, Bud and Hannah Lederle-Ensign, Michael, Andrea and Celeste Haynes and their friends Kricket and Simone.

We fed more than 30 grateful people at Virginia Square and Rosslyn.

We'll make sandwiches next month for the Christmas Eve meal. We will not be doing the delivery that night.

Stewardship Season Begins Generously

Our annual pledge drive has begun! In our first week we received about 20 pledges totaling approximately $44,000, toward a 2012 goal of $85,000. It's the best first week we've had in many years, and we give a huge thanks to every one who has responded to the invitation to make a financial commitment to the mission and ministry at Clarendon.

We'll use this spot in the coming weeks to keep you posted on progress. In the meanwhile, please bring your pledge card to church Sunday and drop it in the offering plate or use the return mail card and send it to church. Every pledge matters greatly to our common work, and every pledge is deeply appreciated.

Make a Joyful Noise this Advent!

Advent begins Sunday, Nov. 27, and we will mark the beginning of the new liturgical year with the joyous "work of the people."

The "work of the people" is the literal translation of "liturgy," and throughout the Sundays of Advent we will work together to make worship at Clarendon truly the work of the people. If you'd like to be part of the multi-voice readings and other aspects of the liturgy through the season, please let me know.

Advent worship will also include lots of joyful song. It's a great time to sing with the choir. Notice we didn't say, "join the choir" as if it's a lifetime commitment. Just come and sing with us for Advent worship.

We rehearse on Sunday morning at 9:15. Come and make a joyful noise with us!

Saving graces

"Every year we celebrate the holy season of Advent, O God. Every year we pray those beautiful prayers of longing and waiting, and sing those lovely songs of hope and promise."
