Gracias! Lots of Notes of Thanks that We Should Share
Thanks to Clark and Cheryl for another evening of grace and hospitality at Unchurch! If you missed it, this Sunday evening is your last chance before Unchurch goes on hiatus until next year.

Thanks to John Gunn and Mike Holloway for  a delicious coffee time; we look forward to the hospitality of Travis Reindl at this Sunday's coffee time.

Fall Clean Up Day
This Saturday we'll put a little shine on the facilities with our annual fall clean up. We'll begin at 9:30 a.m., and work until 1:00 p.m. Give an hour or so to some simple cleaning, rearranging, and minor repairs. There's work for every skill set, and for those of us with no discernible skills at all!
Milestones

Don Hodgen asks prayers for his mother, who faces a lengthy recovery following a car accident.

Ron Bookbinder gives thanks that his Great Aunt Francie Huber has returned to her home to continue recovering from a fall.

Cheryl Lederle asks prayers for her colleague, Uhuru Goss, who is facing surgery and is the primary caregiver for her mother, who is being treated for cancer.

Happy birthday to Hans Bauman, who marks another year on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

In this space we celebrate moments and milestones in the lives of members of the community. So, if you have a birthday, an anniversary, a graduation, a promotion, a retirement, or other milestone to celebrate send me a note and we'll shout it out right here.

Likewise, if you have a prayer concern that you'd like lifted up in the prayer lives of the the community, let me know and we'll list that here, as well.

A Time to Commit
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse

November.2011
Greetings!
cross

This Sunday during worship we will dedicate our pledges to the 2012 CPC operating budget. By now you should have received several old-fashioned pieces of mail, including one last week that contained a pledge card. Please bring the card to church Sunday and put it in the offering plate, as we promise together our faithfulness to living out the love and justice of the gospel.

If you can't make it to church this weekend, please drop the card in the mail and send it back to church. It's incredibly helpful to our planning for 2012 to have a strong indication of the financial support the church will receive from its members.

grace and peace,

David

It's the End of the Unchurch! For Now ...

Sunday evening at 6:00 the Unchurch comes to a close for the fall season. We'll conclude our conversation about the Christian practice of hospitality, and how it draws us out into the world.

Come for dinner at 6:00. Conversation begins at 6:30, and we'll close with a worshipful time of quiet reflection. The evenings will end at 7:30. All are welcome, and it's a great time to invite friends who may be "spiritual but not religious."

Unchurch will feed your body and your soul.

Peter Mika and Ensemble Appassionato Perform Again

Clarinetist Peter Mika and Ensemble Appassionato visit Clarendon again next month for an intimate evening of chamber music in the sanctuary this Saturday at 7:00.

This will mark the second time the ensemble has appeared at CPC. Peter has performed during worship for the congregation on numerous occasions during the past year, and will be joining us again in worship soon.

The performance Saturday evening will include works by Johannes Brahms, Max Bruch, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

CPC Puts the Giving in Thanksgiving!

Join the Clarendon crew this Thanksgiving as we feed Arlington's hungry with the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network. Meet up at church at 5:45 p.m. Thanksgiving day. We'll deliver meals in Virginia Square and Rosslyn. We should be finished handing out food by 7:00 p.m. If you can be part of this Thanksgiving Day service please let me know.

November is Stewardship Season

moneyEvery November, as we consider the annual budget for the congregation and the call of God to be good stewards of our resources I encourage you to go to the web site globalrichlist.com. That site reminds me that even if I cut my income in half I remain among the richest four percent of the world's now 7 billion people. I have been given so much, and it is truly a joy to be able to give back.

That joy reminds me that stewardship is first and foremost a spiritual practice rather than a financial one. To keep my soul balanced I need to give from what I have received. Jesus understood this clearly. As he told his followers, "where your treasure is there will be your heart also." If your treasure is going to God's work of love and justice, then your heart is going there as well, and such is the direction of a healthy heart.

This week you'll receive what should be a second mailing about stewardship that will include a commitment card and an invitation either to mail it back to church or bring it with you on Sunday, November 20, as we dedicate our commitments and ask God's blessing on them. If you do not receive these mailings, please let me know and we'll get the information to you.
Make a Joyful Noise this Advent!

Advent begins Sunday, Nov. 27, and we will mark the beginning of the new liturgical year with the joyous "work of the people."

The "work of the people" is the literal translation of "liturgy," and throughout the Sundays of Advent we will work together to make worship at Clarendon truly the work of the people. If you'd like to be part of the multi-voice readings and other aspects of the liturgy through the season, please let me know.

Advent worship will also include lots of joyful song. It's a great time to sing with the choir. Notice we didn't say, "join the choir" as if it's a lifetime commitment. Just come and sing with us for Advent worship.

We rehearse Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7:00 p.m., and on Sunday morning at 9:15. Come and make a joyful noise with us!
Clearing the Rolls and Updating the Directory

At its November meeting (20th), session will review the membership rolls at CPC. In accordance with the Book of Order, session will consider moving to the inactive members list members of the congregation who have not been active in the work and worship of the church for the past year. Inactive members who have been on the inactive list for two years or longer will be removed from membership. If you believe yourself to be in either of those categories and would like talk about your situation, please call David or any session member.

Directory Update
We're updating the CPC directory this month. There will be a copy of the current directory on the table under the nametags outside the sanctuary. Please take a moment this month to confirm (with a check mark) that your information is correct. Write in updates, or add your information if it's not there.

Also, to help us grow our capacity to celebrate, if you'd like to be celebrated we invite you to add your birthday. No year necessary!

Saving graces

"Pity may represent little more than the impersonal concern which prompts the mailing of a check, but true sympathy is the personal concern which demands the giving of one's soul.

~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
