When the day of Pentecost had come ...
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse | June.2011
|
Greetings!
Sunday is the day of Pentecost, the day we mark as the birthday of the church of Jesus Christ. As the story in Acts goes, on the day of Pentecost when the disciples were together, fearing for their lives after the death of Jesus, the wind and fire of the Holy Spirit swept through their midst and inspired them to come out of hiding and spread the good news that God's love is for everyone. We'll share that good news again this week, as we do every week at CPC. We'll open our hearts to the breath of the spirit, and leave to do the work of the followers of the way of Jesus. Red is the traditional liturgical color for the season of Pentecost, so get your red on! We'll also draw to a close our "season with the sacraments" this Sunday, and do so with a splash -- literally! We'll celebrate the sacrament of baptism for Tara Wray-Samans, daughter of Gwen and Jamie. grace and peace, David PS: Please take a moment to read the invitation below. We do need worship leaders to step forward from the congregation on several Sunday this summer. |

Summer Sabbath Service
Summer time and the living is ... well, sometimes easy and sometimes challenging to schedule!
Over the next few months there will be several Sundays for which we need extra worship leadership:
- July 3, we need leaders for all aspects of worship.
- July 10, we need leaders for many aspects of worship.
- August 14, we need leaders for all aspects of worship.
Please, please, please let me know if you are in town for any of these dates and are able to take on some worship leadership. Thanks in advance for stepping up.

Summer Fun!
The first two big events for summer are on the church calendar, so you should mark yours as well!
Friday, June 24, 7:00 p.m., enjoy "An Evening In Dushanbe." Suzanne Matula will share her experiences of living and working in Tajikistan. Dinner will be "catered" by The Lebanese Taverna. Soft drinks will be provided by CPC, anything else is BYOB. Cost will be $12 per person. You MUST RSVP by no later than Thursday, June 23, if you plan to attend so that we know how much food to order. Contact Mike Bagwell (or 703-931-0515). Saturday, July 9, 7:00 p.m., enjoy "An Evening with Scott Pryor." Philly Weekly calls Scott "perhaps the finest acoustic songwriter in Philadelphia." Scott is touring with a newly released EP. You can check out a few of Scott's songs here. Suggested donation: $10. We've got a few other events in the works, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, mark your calendar for Sunday, August 28, when we'll worship in the woods at Mason Neck State Park for our annual church picnic.

Plotting Against Hunger, and Other Gardening Notes
Several CPC folks attended the AFAC volunteer picnic last week to celebrate our long history of volunteering there. During the event I happened into a conversation with two men who volunteer with AFAC's Plot Against Hunger program, and they were encouraging CPC to consider starting a small plot. So, any gardeners out there interested in digging in the dirt around church ... or, at least, interested in meeting with some folks from AFAC to explore possibilities? Let me know, and we'll set something up.
Meanwhile, if you've got extra produce from your own garden and would like to share with the church community, please feel free to bring it in on Sundays. We'll have a gleaning table available.

More Than Ordination is Changing: nFOG Passes
With the 87th affirmative presbytery vote this week the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has adopted a new form of government. In a letter to the churches, denominational leaders said, "While the new Form of Government will help the PC(USA) to be a faithful and responsive church in the 21st century, it also has a dimension of bringing us back to a truly constitutional document that contains broad governing and theological principles and emphasizes function over structure."
The changes aim to make it easier for local congregations and presbyteries to tailor programs and mission to their local conditions. You can learn more at the PCUSA.org web site at this link.
