Coating Equality!
This request from a the More Light network.

Lindsay Biddle, who went to seminary with Peg True, has been tapped to serve as our denomination's delegate to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

For the occasion she will wear a coat that bears the names of ordained gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender Presbyterians.

If you'd like your name to appear on the coat, e-mail Lindsay. Include your partner's name and she'll put you together in the x-shape of St. Andrew.

A Brand New Day Arrives!
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse

May.2011
Greetings!

cross
By now I am certain that each of you has heard the news: the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has finally made clear the way for ordination of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Presbyterians!

Tuesday evening the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area became the 87th presbytery to ratify the amendment to the Book of Order. Later that same evening the Presbytery of the Pacific became the 88th. Voting continues in remaining presbyteries until July 10, at which point the change officially becomes part of the church's constitution.

At CPC we have, perhaps, come to take the ordination of gay and lesbian elders for granted, and thus some of us may fail to realize just how big a deal this is. Coverage in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, LA Times, USA Today, and scores of other major news outlets ought to underscore the importance of this step for all of us. Google news links to more than 500 articles.

In other words: this is big.

Not only that, but Clarendon has played a disproportionate role in the transformation. Not only does our pastor emerita, the Rev. Madeline Jervis, serve on the national More Light Presbyterians board of directors, but also our session has send overtures to the past three General Assemblies requesting ordination changes. An overture originating here was part of the committee consideration in Minneapolis last summer that led to the overture known as 10-A.

We have been a faithful witness for justice and equality in the church for a generation, and I could not be more proud of you.

The justice arc is mighty long, but it bends toward holy ground, and when we do the work of love it bends the whole world round!

peace,

David

PS: Join our sister More Light congregations for a worshipful celebration of the ratification of 10-A, next Sunday, May 22, at 5:00 p.m. at Western Presbyterian.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance in Alabama, Elsewhere

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is on the ground in various places struck by the massive wave of tornadoes last month. At least seven Presbyterian churches sustained damage in the storms, including five in Tuscaloosa, Ala. (including Covenant Presbyterian, the church where Pastor David was baptized a few years ago).

At this point the biggest need is financial support. To contribute to the relief efforts through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, click here for a link to PDA's secure giving site.

The Arlington Interfaith Council last week received a request through local disaster assistance networks for volunteers to help in the clean up in southern Virginia. If you are interested in further information, please contact David.

Nominating Committee Begins Its Discerning

Sunday, June 5, following worship, the nominating committee will meet to begin its discernment for a slate of three people to fill the session class of 2014. We hold the election of officers as part of the October meeting of the congregation. All members of the congregation are eligible to stand for election to the office of elder. The term of service is three years, and it begins in January, 2012. If you are interested in exploring your own sense of call to serve in this vital ministry, or if you have suggestions for the committee to consider, please contact either of the elder members of the committee: Amber Hodgen or Marit Simenson.

"What a journey this work for justice and equality has been. The thousands of prayers, faithful conversations, sharing of hopes and dreams are all part of building a Church that reflects God's heart and a world that respects all persons."
