Want to be a Member?
| Several folks have asked recently about joining the congregation.
Membership does have its privileges, as they say. In particular, members get to vote on things such as who serves on session. Members can hold office. Members have a say in the budget.
So, if you are interested in exploring membership at CPC, please send me a note.

Gracias! & Help ...
| Thanks to Ted Billings for hosting coffee hour Sunday.
Thanks also to Cheryl for hosting the AFAC bagging crew once again earlier this month.
Many of you signed up to host coffee hour this fall, and the schedule is available as part of the church calendar on line. The week e-blast will also include a reminder.
We look forward to the culinary arts and hospitality of Jeannette Regetz this Sunday morning.
Looking down the road, we still have open dates on October 10 and November 14 and 28. If you can host any of those, please let me know.

Men's Opinions Wanted!
| Come on, guys, just how many times do you get asked for your opinions!
We really want them. Honest!
Sunday morning following worship, grab a cup of coffee and a treat and join Ted Billings and me in tan parlor (just outside the sanctuary off the stairs down to Wilson Hall). We will have a brief conversation about holding a men's retreat early in 2011.

Now is the Time to Lead
| The nominating committee is talking with church members about leadership positions in the congregation, including serving on session. If you would like to suggest a candidate or would like to be considered, please send a note to Toni Bissessar.

Party Like a Pilgrim? Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse
| September, 2010
|
Greetings!
Two of our kids are studying U.S. history this fall, and somehow that fact got tangled up with the recent Pew Forum poll about Americans and their knowledge of religion. One thing led to another in the dinner time conversation, and eventually we learned that those Pilgrims were not necessarily the dour lot they are made out to be. So, after you've taken the on-line quiz, come on over to CPC and party like a Pilgrim! Friday evening at 6:30 we hold our first Wii Kirk of the year. We'll get out the Wii games and other amusements, Cheryl and Clark will cook up some amazing pizza, and you will bring whatever else you want to bring, and we will have a great evening of fun and games. Wii Kirk is a fine opportunity to invite someone who is scared of church and of Christians to come and party like a Pilgrim! peace,
DavidP.S.: Please bring a
non-perishable food item Friday evening to be donated to the Arlington
Food Assistance Center. Consider this the ticket. |

Should You Stay or Should You Go Now?
Tuesday evening at 7:00 we begin a five-week series called Dream. Think. Be. Do. It's a DVD-based series from the Living the Questions folks. That is to say, we'll begin if you want to. As of this writing, I've heard from exactly one person. Please let me know today if you would like to participate in this small-group study. Starting with the foundation of "Love God with all your heart, soul,
strength, and mind" (Luke 10.27), DTBD should spur on our conversations about Christianity for the 21st century. Given the results of the Pew Forum research (noted above and here) indicating that mainline Protestants like us don't know much about our own faith tradition this is a timely study opportunity. Take advantage of it! |
CPC to Host Story Telling Workshop October 2
"We
are not born knowing how to talk about our faith. It is not second-nature for
us to know how to speak faithfully, how to tell God's story amid all the other
stories crowding the landscape or our culture.
The ability to give useful and true testimony has to be acquired and
learned through experience," writes Thomas G. Long in Testimony: Talking Ourselves
into Being Christian. At CPC we have been practicing testimony in worship for several years. We don't call it that because "testimony" is one of those scary church words like "evangelism." But, friends, when you tell a story about your faith ... well, that's all testimony or evangelism really is. This workshop offers a fun way to learn to tell our own stories better. National Capital Presbytery is offering free one-day
workshops on storytelling to members of NCP congregations through SpeakeasyDC a local
nonprofit that teaches and promotes personal storytelling. See a video of workshop veterans here. Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., CPC is hosting one of the workshops.Register now by

Worship Week World Communion SundaySunday morning we celebrate World Communion Sunday with our sisters and brothers in Christ around the globe. This annual celebration was begun by our Presbyterian forebears in 1936, at a time when the world was coming apart at the seams. The day has taken on new significance, as the National Council of Churches suggests, "in a
time when fear divides the
peoples of God's earth. On this day we celebrate our oneness in
Christ, the Prince of Peace, in the midst of the world we are called
to
serve - a world ever more in need of
peacemaking." This Sunday also marks the 30th anniversary of the Presbyterian Peacemaking offering. Created in 1980 to support the denomination's peacemaking work, this offering is one of four
special offerings designated by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s
General Assembly. Most congregations receive this offering, as we do, on World Communion Sunday. We designate 25 percent of the offering for local ministries, including our work at AFAC. Half of the moneys go to support the national Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. The remaining 25 percent supports regional efforts through National Capital Presbytery and the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic. |
