Come Clean Up!
Tomorrow morning at 9:00 we're having a brief summer spiff up morning at church. If you can come for an hour or so to pull a few weeds and tackle a few other tasks around the building, please contact Karen Kimmel this evening. Thanks for your help.
Gracias!
Thanks to Karen for completing the beautiful "Let Your Light Shine" banner that is gracing the sanctuary at the moment. Come and see it Sunday.

Thanks to Don, Karen, Molly and Wes for hosting mission coworker Debbie Chase, who gave a fascinating presentation at church last evening.

Thanks also to Ted Betty for putting out a delicious spread for coffee hour Sunday.

We look forward to enjoying the culinary arts and hospitality of Mike Hollaway and John Gunn this weekend.

If you signed up to host coffee hour this summer the sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the main hall outside of the church offices. The information is also on the calendar on the church web site.
Prepare for Pride!
June is Pride time and once again we will show our colors at several joyous events.

First, Thursday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m., People of Faith for Equality Virginia sponsors the fourth annual NoVA Pride Interfaith service. This year the Metropolitan Community Church of Fairfax is host and the theme is Faith Out Loud!

On Saturday, June 12, we'll join our More Light friends in walking in the DC Pride Parade. We gather at Church of the Pilgrims (22nd and P St. NW) at 5:30. This always a huge amount of fun, and is the one chance you will get this year to receive a 1.5-mile standing ovation simply for showing up and being a Christian.

Sunday, June 13, is the Pride Festival, and we will have a presence in the More Light booth. If you'd like to be part of that please let me know. The festival is a blast and this year we are going to try a "Story Corp" type interview project to capture the stories of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender person's experiences with church. Should be interesting!

Mark your calendars for these, and I will see you there.
Summer Schedule
Summer time always brings a more relaxed pace and schedule at Clarendon. Reflecting that reality, beginning in June the weekly e-blast will become a biweekly event till September.
Walk Together Children,
Don't You Get Weary!
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse
June, 2010
Greetings!

Harry Knox
Hi all,

During the Civil Rights Movement marchers often sang "walk together children, don't you grow weary, there's a great camp meeting in the promised land."

Next week we get to walk together, children, one more time for justice. It's Pride Parade time again -- the only time all year that you will get a 1.5-mile continuous standing ovation simply for being a Presbyterian and showing up.

So join our sisters and brothers from other More Light congregations in the area to walk together, children. We'll meet up at 5:30, Saturday, June 12, at the Church of the Pilgrims at 22nd and P Streets in DC, two blocks from the DuPont Circle Metro stop.

It's time to walk with pride and to share the good news that hope is alive and is the beating heart of people walking in the way of Jesus.

June will be a month of hope at CPC

Throughout June our Sunday worship will focus on hope. The meditation each week will be entitled, "You Gotta Give 'Em Hope," the signature line of the late Harvey Milk.

June 6 we will talk about the nature of individual hope, and use as our primary text Paul's words to the Christians at Rome from Romans 5:1-15.

June 13 is More Light Sunday for many congregations across the country and we will mark it with conversation about our hopes for the church both locally and broadly. Our principle text for that Sunday will be John 16:12-15.

June 20 we will expand our vision a bit and talk about hope in the context of social change. Our text for that morning will be Luke 8:26-39.

June 27 we will draw it altogether, perhaps literally, as we try to picture our hopes.

I look forward to a summer season filled with hope.

peace,

David
AFACA Summer of Service
Ways You Can Serve and Get Involved

This summer we will put our faith into action serving the community and the broader church in several ways.

AFAC Service
On the third Monday evening (7:00) of each month we will bag groceries at the Arlington Food Assistance Center. This month that falls on the 21st, the first day of summer!

Hungry remains an urgent issue for many families in Arlington. Last week AFAC served 1,228 families including 2,170 adults and 1,400 children. These figures represent a 10-percent increase from one year ago and a 66-percent increase from this time in 2008.

To increase our impact, on Sunday, June 20, we will receive a food offering of non-perishable items. Last month we donated about 125 pounds of food.

A-SPAN Opportunity
Next month, on Thursday the 22nd, we will volunteer with the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network preparing and delivering a meal to homeless neighbors in Arlington. The details on this event will be forthcoming, but please mark your calendars now for this important service opportunity.

GA Overtures
When the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meets next month in Minneapolis Clarendon's voice will be heard. The overtures that our session sent to GA (through National Capital Presbytery) will challenge the church to reflect gospel values by removing barriers to the ordination of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons of faith, changing the language of our Book of Worship to make marriage liturgies inclusive of same-gender couples, and challenging the entire church to a season of study and discernment on our commitment to nonviolence. David will being serving the presbytery as an overture advocate on these issues.

Other Opportunities
We continue to be in conversation with Habitat for Humanity concerning their ongoing project in South Arlington. We hope to arrange a work day with Habitat this summer. Stay tuned!
worshipA Summer of Special Worship
Vespers and Ice Cream!

Summer seems a perfect time for relaxed worship in the beauty of God's creation. This summer we will step outside for worship one evening each month, beginning Tuesday, June 22.

Weather permitting, we'll gather on the "grassy knoll" on the playground for a brief time of community worship filled with story, song and prayer.

Then we'll share a tasty summer treat and some good fellowship.

If it's raining we will move into the sanctuary.

Looking down the road, we will hold vespers services Tuesday, July 20, and Tuesday, August 24.
moneySummer Giving

Summer is a time of gracious Sabbath, and most of us will spend some time away over the next several months. The kids and I will be in Chattanooga for a week in mid-July, and I'll be down at Camp Hanover as pastor-in-residence for two weeks in August.

It is easy in the midst of all the traveling to forget a few details. One details I'd encourage you to be mindful of is your pledge to the church.

We sometimes run into cash-flow issues during July and August, and we'd love to avoid that this summer. You can help by keeping current through the summer. If you have any questions about your pledges (or if you did not make a pledge to the 2010 budget but would like to do so now) please contact elder Reg Mitchell.

Thanks so much for your faithful support of the mission and ministry of Clarendon Presbyterian Church.
