Coffee Crisis!
|
Well, it's only a crisis if you want to have coffee time.
No one is signed up to host this weekend's coffee hour, and no one is signed up to help put together a 3rd-Sunday brunch on the 21st.
If you can help out, please let me know as soon as possible: revdocdee@gmail.com. |

March 2010
|
Greetings!
Every week is a good week to begin in worship, but some weeks are special. This is one of those weeks.
Harry Knox, director of HRC's Religion and Faith Program, will join us in worhsip leadership. Harry also serves on the 25-member President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships under President Obama. He was the recipient of the 2000 Cordle Award for Promotion of God's
Diversity and Lancaster Theological Seminary's 2005 Robert V. Moss
Medal for Excellence in Ministry. Denied ordination because he is gay,
Knox has relied on God to make a way where there was no way. He
continues to speak out for those who have been marginalized and
forsaken.
Harry learned the art of preaching under the great Fred Craddock, who did not like sermon titles. So we don't know what Harry is going to preach this weekend, but it will be good.
Every Sunday is a fine time to invite friends to join us, but this weekend presents a special opportunity to show off who we are. So bring along a friend for a worship experience that you won't fine anywhere this weekend except CPC.
Come and worship. Come and celebrate.
peace,
David

Feed My Sheep: AFAC bagging
Monday, March 16, we bag groceries at AFAC at 7:00 p.m. This Sunday is our monthly food offering. Last month we noticed that the cupboards at AFAC were quite bare. They continue to see an increasing number of families, and they need our help providing food. During the first week of March, they served 1,296 families, an increase of almost 20 percent from the same time last year. We'll gather at David and Cheryl's for a simple meal following our work. All are welcome. |
Free! Music! Free! Music! Free!
The price is right and the music will be great, so come to CPC Saturday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. for "Song and Dance," a performance by the Ibis Chamber Ensemble.
Children of all ages are invited to meet the harp, flute and strings in this 40 minute program.
IBIS was founded in Florida by Joseph Scheer and Susan Robinson. Now
residents of Arlington, Virginia, Joe is the concertmaster of the
Boston POPS Esplanade Orchestra, and Susan is the principal harpist of
the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and the Boston Pops Esplanade
Orchestra. Joe and Susan will be joined this season by colleagues from
the Kennedy Center Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra on
flute, violin, viola and cello.
Our mission
is to present great chamber music concerts, that feature a refreshing
variety of music and a friendly approach to music-making. Our
programming ranges from the familiar to the unconventional and
encompasses a dazzling spectrum of sonorities. We are as interested in
the audience member who protests that he 'knows nothing about music' as
the more experienced concert-goer. Our concerts are attended by
neighborhood folks, music lovers from all around D.C., and even a
healthy number of kids. An IBIS concert is always informal, informative
and fun!
Best of all, most of our performances are free to the public.

Music & Spoken Word Sunday
Our annual Music and the Spoken Word Sunday will be on April 11, 2010, the Sunday after Easter.
For
that service, we invite you to share a
reading or a piece of music that holds a special spiritual meaning for you, whether or not that item is considered "sacred" or "secular." For
example, past participants have read from favorite poems, novels, plays
and essays, as well as favorite psalms, interpretations of Bible
stories, and reflections by authors of religious texts. We've had people share personal stories and have also had small-group skits performed. Shared
music pieces have ranged from live instrumental or vocal performances
to prerecorded pieces on CD (a CD player will be provided). This year, the choir will be performing a special selection or two and the
Sunday school kids will also be singing. Whatever you feel led to contribute, please let us know by no later than Easter Sunday, April 4, so that we will have time to assemble the program. Contact Mike Bagwell at tnpava@yahoo.com or 703-931-0515. In your message, include your name, the title of the piece you wish to share, the author or performer (as
applicable) and the approximate length the piece will take to read, play or perform.
