Thanksgiving Opportunities
|
While CPC will be quiet over the holiday, there are many opportunities in Arlington to share the spirit of gratitude in service to our neighbors. Personally, I'll be taking part in Alexandria's 5-mile Turkey Trot that supports food ministries in Alexandria. I'd be loyal to Arlington, but its race begins at 8:00 a.m. while Alexandria's is closer to our house and begins at 10!

Pastoral Notes & Words of Thanks
|
Jean Ensminger is home recovering from a brief stay in hospital following a heart procedure.
Thanks to David Pitts and Travis Reindl for a delicious coffee time Sunday. This week we look forward to enjoying the culinary arts of John Gunn and Michael Holloway.

Help Wanted! Opportunities to Serve | Coffee hour! Many folks signed up to host coffee time through the end of 2009! Thanks everyone.
Please check the brand new 2010 "coffee hour sign-up sheet" this weekend and sign up to host a future coffee time. If you have questions about what's involved, we have answers. And they are all simple!
TAKE THREE: In an effort to cut some significant expenses we are planning an experiment in community self-sufficiency. If you're interested in doing a bit of regular grounds work, contact Marc Scarcella at m.scarcella@gmail.com. If you play your cards right you might get to drive a tractor!
I've posted this before, and thus far know of no response. Personally, I'm looking forward to some tractor time, but I cannot do it all by myself. |
Make a Joyful Noise!
|
We are the joyous people of God at CPC, and the most fun, joyous group going is the choir!
We welcome anyone who likes to sing, whether or not you know a base clef from a fine chef.
We practice at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Thursdays of most months, and meet Sunday mornings at 9:15.

November 2009
|
Greetings!
A very happy Thanksgiving to you!
For those in our community and everyone else on the road this holiday, travel mercies. We seek such mercies not merely that we might be healthy, but also that we might be able to continue to serve and respond to God's call to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God.
May that spirit inform the holiday, and may we be a people filled with gratitude for all that we have been given. Enjoy the holiday!
Grace and peace,
David

CPC Worship Week
Sunday is New Year's Day!
OK. Not in the sense of parades, and football games and hangovers, but Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent and is, thus, the first day of the liturgical calendar.
We begin a few new aspects of worship, as well. At 10:00 a.m., the chimes will sound as usual, but rather than a call to worship, we will share the news of the community and welcome everyone to worship.
Then we will prepare our hearts for worship and begin to praise the Lord.
During Advent we will continue a tradition begun a couple of years ago by having members of the community share seasonal reflections on faith. This Advent, we will share particular family traditions and what they mean. This Sunday, Sallye Broome will stand in for Ditty Boaz, and offer some thoughts from Ditty as she reflected back over 90 Christmas seasons.
We will also begin the season by gathering at table to share in the Lord's Supper. We come to table together having reflected on the word of the Lord as it comes to us in Jeremiah 33:14-16 and 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13. The pastoral meditation is called "These Days Are Surely Coming."
Finally, as noted throughout November, we will receive and dedicate our pledges for the 2010 CPC budget this Sunday.

Holiday Events Calendar
As noted above, the new liturgical calendar begins with the first Sunday of Advent. We dedicate our pledges for the 2010 CPC budget during worship this Sunday.
Saturday, Dec. 5, we hold our 2nd annual CCCC-CPC cookie decorating
party at 10:00 a.m. We're getting cookies together for the families of
Doorways. If you'd like to prepare some cookies for decorating, please
let Molly know.
We continue the celebration on the second Sunday (Dec. 6) with "deck the halls" day. Plan to stick around following worship as we sign carols, enjoy sweets and decorate the sanctuary.
Watch for order forms at church this week for buying poinsettias ($10 for one; $7.50 apiece for two or more) to brighten the sanctuary for the season.
Saturday, Dec. 12, Cheryl and David host their annual cookie bake open house from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Come and bake, or come and eat! If there are any leftovers, we'll share them following worship Dec. 13.
We will be supporting the families of Doorways again this season. They welcome gift cards from Target, Safeway, or Giant, and are in particular need of new twin bed sheets in neutral colors. In addition to our work on behalf of those families, we will receive the annual Christmas Joy offering on the final Sunday of Advent.
We will gather for our annual service of lights and lessons on Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m. We will receive contributions that evening to support AFAC.

A Quick Look Ahead

December and January hold both the usual (non-holiday) events as well as a few special gatherings. Here is a brief look at several of them.
The Clarendon Writers' Circle meets again on the Monday, Dec. 14, at 7:00 p.m. The group meets the second and fourth Monday evening of each month, though we will take a break on Dec. 28.
We bag groceries at AFAC on Monday, Dec. 21, at 7:00 p.m. As you can see from the photo above, bagging is an opportunity to serve that includes all ages. Following our work we meet at Cheryl and David's for a simple meal. This month that meal is a potluck.
Looking ahead to January, we will hold a series of gatherings for those interested in exploring membership at CPC. If you are interested, please let me know.
Depending upon the response to those gatherings, we will receive new members on Jan. 31, just in time for our winter congregational meeting held on the final Sunday of January.
