ADP Update!

Effective June 8, 2011, all employers are required to include the hire date of each newly hired employee when reporting new hire information. In an effort to ensure compliance with the new Claims Resettlement Act, ADP has made the necessary modifications in the Autopay Payroll System to make sure that the hire date is recorded prior to reporting any new hire records.

The new law requires that ALL food handlers hired prior to June 1, 2011, take an approved food-safety examination by July 1, 2011. Those hired after June 1, 2011, have 30 days after their hire date to pass the exam and obtain their food-handler card.

Vine Online; An Online "Redbook"

Did you know that Vine Online offers a Online Manager's Log (OML) similar to that of a "redbook" to document important day-to-day operational information? The OML is broken down into 6 categories; Sales Figures, Tasks, Events, Messages, Staffing, and Log.

The user has the option of typing in a day that he/she may want to see in the date textbox.  There is also a second box near the top of page which will list different locations that the user has access to.  When using these two boxes, after you have entered your selections, click on the 'Show' button to display the desired date.

In addition, the OML also tracks which users have viewed a particular day by displaying a green check next to their name. If the user has not viewed the OML for that day, a red 'x' will appear next to their name.  This allows users to keep track of who has and has not viewed the details of a particular day.

Form 1099/Form W9

Tax Documents

The IRS requires companies to submit Form 1099 for all payments aggregating $600 or more in a calendar year to a single payee for services received, including rent. In order to ensure that we obtain necessary information to complete your filings, you will be receiving a letter from Vine Solutions regarding Form 1099 along with a copy of Form W-9, the form used to gather payee tax information. Look for the letter in your return packet from us in the coming weeks.

Keep in mind that the scope of 1099 filings are due to expand in 2012 to include payments for goods and payees who are corporations. Currently, the House of Representatives passed a bill which would repeal the expanded Form 1099 information reporting requirements and the bill is before the Senate for consideration. Until the Senate passes any repeal of the expanded requirements and the President signs such a change into law, you should continue to obtain and maintain the necessary records.

If you have questions regarding Form 1099, the IRS has information posted on their website: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1099msc.pdf.

571 Forms

With tax season well under way, please do not forget about property taxes! Many counties have already sent out business property statements. The returns are generally due April 1. Please be on the lookout for 571 forms and send them along with your weekly packet!

San FranciscoBusiness Registration Renewals

Beginning with the 2011 - 2012 fiscal year, Business Registration Renewal fees will be due on or before May 31, 2011 rather than February 28, 2011. The Tax Collector will be sending you payment and filing information in April 2011 regarding your business registration renewal. Please send any communications you receive in your weekly packet.

Restaurant Spotlight
                   Ubuntu Napa

With a name like Ubuntu, derived from the South African native origin to mean "humanity towards others", the restaurant pristinely located in Napa, Ca, exudes a philosophy as unique and carefully crafted as the menu itself.                        Ubuntu

Chef Aaron London, who was just recently recognized by the San Francisco Chronicle as a "Rising Star Chef" of 2011, expresses the importance of maintaining a deep sense of community while giving homage to the land for which his menu is derived. The all-vegetable cuisine created by London and his staff is cultivated almost entirely from their onsite gardens at Ubuntu, with the exception of a few local, organic purveyors who follow the same strict biodynamic farming practices. And while the restaurant serves only vegetarian and vegan cuisine, the perception is hardly of restriction; rather it "offers a celebration of the earth's natural organic produce, rather than the "no meat" stigma that can sometimes be understood." One quick glance at the Michelin-starred menu offering dishes such as Horseradish Gnocchi with Hakurei Turnips served with truffle fondutta and Spring Onion Jam Doughnuts filled with cool burrata, certainly don't convey the idea of a neglected palate.

Ubuntu also features an extraordinary wine list which compliments London's vegetable-centric dishes.  Wine Director and General Manager, Naomi Steinkamp, has chosen to showcase a variety of locally produced wines, 90% of which come from vineyards which adhere to sustainable farming practices.

"We aspire to the philosophy of 'ubuntu', which means that we practice humanity in all our relationships-with employees, management, customs, and vendors-so that everyone benefits."-- Sandy Lawrence, Owner.

Ubuntu is open for dinner Monday-Sunday from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. Lunch is available Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 to 2:30 pm. Reservations are available by calling (707) 251-5656.
