"American Enka and the Modern Labor Movement"
A Brown Bag Lecture by Dr. Jennifer E. Brooks

The strike at the American Enka plant

In conjunction with the new feature exhibition American Enka and the Modern Labor Movement, guest curator Jennifer E. Brooks from Auburn University will give a Brown Bag Lecture this Wednesday. The lecture will examine the 1950 strike in Hamblen County and the ensuing violence that led to Hubert Humphrey holding congressional hearings in Morristown. Brooks will place the strike in context of the modern labor movement in the South following World War II. 

 

The exhibition and lecture are both free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring a lunch. Canned drinks will be available for purchase.

Road's I've Traveled: The Life's Work of Jim Gray
On Display at the East Tennessee History Center through April 23 
Of the Mountains by Jim Gray.

If you have not seen the feature exhibition Roads I've Traveled: The Life's Work of Jim Gray, please make plans to do so by next Saturday, April 23.  The retrospective exhibition has been described as one of ETHS's best, and even Jim Gray himself said that he wouldn't change a thing!  The exhibition features the landscapes Gray is famous for, as well as seascapes, portraiture, sculpture, and even works by other Gray family members.  You won't want to miss this one.

ETHS Annual Meeting of the Membership

To kick off the ETHS celebration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, The ETHS Annual Meeting of the Membership will be held at the Mabry-Hazen House in Knoxville on May 3. Guests will hear  "Melody and History: Songs from the Civil War Era" by Conny Ottway, as well as the announcement of ETHS Civil War Commemoration plans, election of officers, and presentation of awards. Guests are invited to come early to take a tour of the Mabry-Hazen House and Bethel Cemetery starting at 4 p.m.. Cost is $35 and reservations are required. For more information click here.

Genealogy Workshops  
East Tennessee History Center 
 
Internet Genealogy- April 30, 11 am-12 pm and 1-2 pm, with instructor George K. Schweitzer, PhD. Students use an individual computer to locate and explore the seven major surname sites. Limited to 22 participants. Pre-registration is required and begins April 18. Call 865-215-8809.
  
The McClung Genealogical Collection- May 14, 10am-12pm with instructor Steve Cotham, MA, MLS, Manager, McClung Collection. Students will learn how to use the book, microfilm, manuscript, and internet facilities of the McClung Historical Collection to advance their genealogical research. No reservation is required.
