HAPPY NEW YEAR winter issue
I look towards 2011 with much excitement as the gallery continues in its mission to present young artists of extraordinary merit. In the past, we have had the pleasure to introduce such talents as Oben Abright and Martin Janecky in their premiere exhibitions.
Kerrick Johnson's first solo exhibition continues through January 15th. The response to this exceptional artist's works comes as no surprise. I am very pleased to include Kerrick as the most recent member of the gallery's family.
Our next studio glass auction will take place Sunday, February 6th. Consignments continue to be accepted and will be online for absentee bidding prior to the live event.

Kerrick Johnson: Cutting Edge at Marta Hewett Gallery
| | Trapezia, 23"x15"x6" |
In the tradition of the Marta Hewett Gallery, we are pleased to introduce another "first" with the exhibition of Cutting Edge, new works by Chattanooga artist, Kerrick Johnson. This show of fifteen blown and cut glass pieces is the artist's premiere solo exhibit in the United States. Kerrick Johnson is featured in the winter issue of American Style Magazine as one of the most exciting, emerging artists from 2010.
At first glance it is easy to be captivated by Johnson's large, elegant forms as they capture the fluidity of molten, blown glass. In many works, the artist's vibrant and surprising color combinations are intensified by the optics of thick, clear glass around the colorful core, while other pieces are finished with the thinnest of overlays that are cut through to reveal the colors beneath.
It is Johnson's cold working of the glass that adds exceptional contrast to the original, fluid shape. The artist combines traditional cutting patterns like "battuto" with glass carving on a large scale. Wide channels and deep, spiraling grooves alter and define the silhouette of the sculpture versus merely decorating the surface. Johnson repeatedly reveals the "honest beauty" of his material.

During the opening, visitors were treated to a brief discussion by the artist about the influences on his work, as well as recent directions the pieces have taken him. Kerrick Johnson has worked at the New Orleans School of Glass and the Appalachain Center for Crafts. His pieces are created in his personal studio located in Chattanooga, TN.
Cutting Edge: New Works by Kerrick Johnson continues through January 15th. |

The Ohio River Glass Group (ORGG) hosts Karen Chambers lecture, Studio Glass in Cincinnati: A Look Back
The gallery was pleased to host a lecture, in conjunction with the Ohio River Glass Group (ORGG), by author and curator Karen S. Chambers, reviewing the activities of artists, collectors, museums and galleries in the Cincinnati area. Ms. Chambers provided an overview of glass development as an artistic medium since 1960. Her emphasis on local involvement featured past exhibitions, highlights of local artists' works and a peek into several significant Cincinnati collections. A version of Ms. Chambers' lecture can be found in Aeqai, Cincinnati's regional arts magazine. |
