| SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE |
United Way of Mid & South Jefferson County (UW MSJC) and United Board of Missions are mobilizing the community to collect new school supplies for needy children to assist them with their studies and help build self-esteem. We are inviting you to make a positive impact on a child's life this coming school year. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to improve the quality of life for less fortunate children in our community as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Additional information as well as a list of school supplies needed and drop off sites can be found at www.unitedwaymsjc.org. |

| SOUTHEAST TEXAS FOOD BANK |
On May 14, 2010, Target employees took part in a United Way Day of Caring by sorting and packaging food at the Southeast Texas Food Bank. Most people don't realize how many people are struggling. For most of us, it is so easy to forget that many in America don't know where their next meal will come from. Many have to choose between having enough food to eat or paying rent. We want to get people thinking about, talking about, and taking on activities around hunger awareness. |

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

UW MSJC, in collaboration with IRS and AARP, has coordinated an effort to provide tax preparation and assistance with filing tax credits to eligible residents in Jefferson County. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is targeted to low-to-moderate income workers who qualify to receive the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which refunds up to $4,400 depending on family size and income.
This year the tax site was open every Monday from February 1st through April 15th at the Port Arthur Public Library. Through a grant from the United Way of Texas and Bank of America supplies were purchased to support our efforts in the VITA program. Our impact to the community has shown an increase of 129% in tax returns being prepared and an increase of 182% of EITC funds being put back into taxpayer's pocket.
If you would like to volunteer for next year's program, please contact Karen Do at 409-729-4040 or dokaren@sbcglobal.net.

| 2010 Campaign Starting Soon!
| | From August through November 2010,
UW MSJC will hold its annual fundraising campaign to benefit 22 local nonprofit organizations in our community. United Way is working to advance the common good by focusing on the basic building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a family through retirement and good health. The goal is to create long-lasting changes in people's lives by addressing the underlying causes of problems. Through the LIVE UNITED™ campaign, United Way is asking people to be part of the change...to give, advocate and volunteer in the areas of education, income and health. You can donate through our website at www.unitedwaymsjc.org and selecting "Give" on the toolbar; by mailing a personal check to 7980 Anchor Drive, #600, Port Arthur, Texas 77642; or by payroll deduction through your workplace campaign. |
