END OF THIRD QUARTER

In order to save trees and money and to get your child's grades to you more quickly and efficiently, CCS is now providing report cards electronically through the aCCeSs system.  Delivering the report cards electronically makes both economic and environmental sense, and we hope you will support the school in this change.  The end-of-the-year report card will be mailed home in a hard copy format.

At this time, we have reached the end of the third quarter and your child's report card will be published to aCCeSs Wednesday morning.

As a reminder, you can find a link to aCCeSs at the bottom of the CCS homepage  www.charlestoncollegiate.org.  In order to check your son or daughter's report card, log in and follow the following steps:

1.      Find the heading "Students" at the top of the page.

2.     Select "Report Cards."

3.      Also on the left, please be sure to select the correct "Marking Column (Quarter 3).

You can also view homework assignments and daily grades on a daily basis.  To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Again find the heading "Students" at the top of the page.
  2. Select "Assignments" or  "Averages"or "Daily grades".
  3. On the left you can select to view the assignments in a list format or a calendar format.  The dates listed are the date that the assignment is due.
  4. On the left you can also select each class individually or all classes.
  5. On the top right select "Expand All" to view each assignment.

As always, if you have questions about an individual class you may contact your child's advisor or the teacher directly through email.  We hope that you find aCCeSs to be an informative tool for your regular use.  Please explore this site and contact your Division Head or Jean Pendleton, Director of Technology if you need further assistance.

SIGN IN AND PARKING RULES

Sign-in and Parking Rules

To better ensure the safety of our students, we are instituting and enforcing the following policies, effective immediately:

Visitor Sign-in

Other than parents dropping off or picking up a child, any visitor(including parents) must sign in and get a name tag at the front desk upon arrival on campus.  If a faculty or staff member sees a visitor or parent on campus without a name tag, the faculty or staff member has been instructed to escort that person to the front office to sign in.

Drop-off & Pick-up

Morning drop off and afternoon pick up for grades Preschool - 12 is the main entrance circleonly.

Student & Parent Parking

The gym parking lot is reserved for CCS Staff and CCS Seniors only from 7:00 am - 5:00 pm.  Please do not park in this lot, as there are only enough spaces for those mentioned above. All other students and parents should park in the one-way gravel lot next to the main entrance circle. Please enter this lot at the beginning of the circle and exit this lot at the other end near the playground and drive around behind the lot to exit.   This new plan has proven to maximize safety for students and vehicles during rush hour times. Also, please adhere to all stop signsand ask your student drivers to do the same.   We are awaiting new signs to clearly mark these areas.

After School Policy for MS/US Students

Middle and Upper school students remaining on campus after 3:30 pm that are not involved in athletics or specific after school programs should sign in with Ms. Selby in the library until 4:30 and with the C-Club teachers from 4:30-5:30.  Students should stay in the library with Ms. Selby or with anotherassigned teacher until a parent arrives to pick them up in order to assure their safety.

Our priority is the safety of our students. We appreciate your cooperation with the above policies!

FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE

Going forward, completed applications will be reviewed weekly by the Financial Aid Committee. WINTERIM

Dear Middle School Parents:

The fifth through eighth grade winterim trip will be to the Camp Greenville Outdoor Environmental Education Center in Cedar Mountain, NC March 23 - 25, 2011. We will leave school at 7:00am on Wednesday March 23, and return for regular dismissal on Friday March 25.

This trip is designed to incorporate aspects of our science curriculum with outdoor education. In addition, winterim is unique because it exposes the students to the environment and our ecology, with many of the activities taking place outdoors. For instance, students will be participating on hikes to learn about the ecology and environment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. To add, students will gain experience orienteering, making night sky observations, leadership, team building, and other outdoor adventure activities (please refer to the next page for more information about the Greenville Outdoor Environmental Education Center). Every student is expected to attend, as this trip is a regular part of the curriculum.

The cost of the trip is $175.00, which includes lodging, activities, transportation and all meals and snacks. Students will be sleeping in heated cabins with bunk beds; the boys and girls will be in separate cabins. Attached, you will find medical release forms, a packing list and itinerary detailing your child's experience. Please sign the form below and return it along with the medical release form and full payment (made payable to CCS) to Mr. Hemingway no later than March 18. If you have any questions please email Mr. Hemingway at bhemingway@charlestoncollegiate.org.

FROM THE GREEN TEAM

GREEN NEWS

The Green Team is very excited about some projects we have been working on. Our first big event will take place during the Annual CCS Auction. Our team has gathered many wonderful environmentally friendly items to be auctioned off. The items range from biodegradable trash bags to beautiful pieces of art that would easily be found in a museum. All proceeds from that table will go toward the amazing plans for the new outdoor facility on the CCS campus. Please come and support our school while having fun at the same time.

In keeping with the supporting and promoting spirit for the low ropes course and facility buildings, please come to the Campout scheduled for April 15th. The Haynies do a wonderful job of creating that great outdoor experience. All proceeds from the campouts will also go directly toward the new outdoor facility. It is exciting to know the last 3 campouts generated enough funds to cover the cost of materials for one of the structures. Construction is planned to start this month. Thank you CCS families for supporting such a great endeavor.

Another project will take place during Green Week in April. CCS has joined forces with other schools in the Charleston area to help make our county clean and beautiful. Our whole school will participate in the Clean Cities sweep from April 18th - April 21st. The lower school along with 5th and 6th grades will clean our campus. We are also hoping to adopt a 2 mile stretch of Plow Ground Road. The plan is for 8th - 12th grades to clean and maintain that area for 2 years. Cleaning Plow Ground Rd. will earn us the distinction of adopting that particular stretch of road. A sign will be posted giving us the recognition our students deserve.

We hope to see everyone at these events. Not only will it be fun, but you'll be supporting some fabulous plans for our school and helping the community at the same time. See you soon!

CCS AT THE CHARLESTON FILM FESTIVAL

CCS is proud to participate in the 4th annual Charleston Film Festival.  The Festival opens March 16th and runs through March 20th at the Terrace Theater on Maybank Highway, James Island.

Most exciting is the inclusion of CCS student David Carter's film short, The Atlanta Experience. David's film is the only student film to be shown at the Festival. Showtimes are Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20 at 1:00pm.

This year, the Festival will feature 30 films from 10 countries, including award winners from the Toronto Film Festival.  The Festival will also include an award winning film produced by CCS parent and Terrace Theater owner Paul Brown.  I WAS A RAT is an intelligent "fractured fairytale" with a new twist on the classic Cinderella story.  For more information, visit www.terracetheater.com

PENNIES FOR PEACE

Pennies for Peace

We are excited to share with you that our students will participate in a Pennies for Peace campaign from now until May!

Pennies for Peace is a program of the Central Asia Institute (CAI), founded by Greg Mortenson - author of Three Cups of Tea.  CAI is nonprofit organization that promotes and provides education and literacy programs in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.  Since 1998, CAI has helped to build over 100 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Pennies for Peace program goal is to encourage our students, who are ultimately our future leaders, to learn the value of philanthropy by collecting pennies for global peace.  We hope to empower students by making them the leaders of this effort, and encourage them to get creative in raising funds for education.

Students may donate pennies in Mrs. Ferris' office, or through Middle School student government.  100% of donations will go to the Pennies for Peace program, and Blue and Gold teams will also be awarded points for the most pennies!

We are partnering in this mission with other Charleston independent schools, with a mission to raise awareness and funds for peace through education.  We will culminate our campaign with a Peace Fair on May 7, from 3-6pm!  More details will follow!

If you have any questions about our Pennies for Peace campaign, please feel free to contact Patricia Ferris, pferris@charlestoncollegiate.org, or Kate Williams, kwilliams@charlestoncollegiate.org.

Our students are eagerly looking forward to this new adventure!
