ERB TESTING
Next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, September 20, 21, and 22, students in grades 2-10 will be taking the CTP4 tests designed by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB).  These standardized tests assess students in verbal and quantitative reasoning as well as in reading comprehension and mathematics.  CCS uses these tests to help us in planning our curriculum and to determine in what areas individual students need further assistance or extra challenge.  As the ERB describes on their website:

This test is designed as a "low-stakes" exam, the purpose of which is to test what a student knows at a given point in time, in order to identify strengths and weaknesses. It is intended to help teachers and administrators make decisions about classroom instruction. As such, there are no preparatory materials available for it. This makes the test a more accurate reflection of the student's knowledge, and makes it a better diagnostic tool.  http://www.erbtest.org/parents/

The results of your son or daughter's performance on the CTP4 tests will be discussed with you during a future parent/teacher conference.   In the Lower School the classroom teachers will determine testing times.  In the Middle and Upper School these tests will be administered in the mornings and a revised class schedule will be followed in the afternoons.  Since 11th and 12th grade students do not take these exams, they may arrive to school at 10:15 in time for the first class period.  Please help your child achieve success on these tests by ensuring that they eat a nutritious breakfast and get a good night's sleep!  If you have any additional questions, you may contact your Division Head.
FROM THE FRONT OFFICE

9TH GRADERS MAKE GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
The ninth graders in Ms. Pendleton's Applied Technology class are supporting small-business entrepreneurs through microloans. Using Kiva.org and funds supplied by the teacher, the students each chose one entrepreneur from another country to support. Learning about microfinance is part of the curriculum in which students create their own nonprofit organizations. Check out their lender's page at: http://www.kiva.org/lender/ccs or come see their bulletin board outside of the computer lab!

This is a great way for Lower School students and parents to get involved and show support for our school!

FROM THE TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT
CALLING ALL LAPTOPS! CCS offers several courses that require the students to have laptop computers and not all of our families have a laptop to spare. If you have a laptop that you no longer need, our students will put it to good use! And you can receive a tax deduction for the value of it. Please contact Austin Starowicz as astarowicz@charlestoncollegiate.org if you have one to donate. Thank you!
WEEKLY ICE CREAM SALES
CCS is selling ice cream again during lunch times.  We will be selling ice cream sandwiches, fudge bars, ice cream bars and orange creamcicles.  The price for ice cream is 50 cents.  The money made from ice cream sales goes towards the café supplies such as napkins, cups and all utensils.  If you have any questions, please contact Tiffany Frank at tfrank@charlestoncollegiate.org.  Thank you!
LOCKS OF LOVE
Locks of Love - Join us in giving!

Over a million children in the U.S. suffer from medical conditions that cause hair loss.  You are invited to help!  Mrs. Williams and Ms. Murphy plan to grow their hair to donate this winter and would love for CCS teachers, students, and parents to join in giving a gift to Locks of Love!
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss.  Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Your gift can help restore self-esteem and confidence for these special children.
Please see the Locks of Love website, www.locksoflove.org, for more information on this charity's mission, how to give, and requirements for hair donation.  Questions? Email kwilliams@charlestoncollegiate.org.
Have a great week,
