Greetings!
The Class of 2010 graduates this weekend! The 2010 Junior Marshals and Honor Graduate (and student speaker) for Saturday's commencement were selected by the faculty and announced last week: Honor Graduate - Jordan de Jong; Junior Marshals - Tyler Swain, Johnna Menke, Sydney Bertsch, and Stuart Bowers. Please also see an exciting announcement below about this year's commencement speaker.
Please congratulate our senior athletes for winning the following awards at Friday's 2010 Athletic Banquet: Female Athlete of the Year - Jessica Wood; Male Athlete of the Year - Will Hamburger; Charles P. Stoney Sportsmanship Award - Townes Moore.
The Lower School Spring Concert was Tuesday night, May 11th. Led by music teacher Rebecca Knox, the younger students -- dressed as dogs -- sang songs for "Arf!" while the older students entertained the audience with a pirate show. (Pictured: first graders Dalia Medrano and Caroline Shaw)
If you know of any fellow parents who are not receiving weekly announcements, please forward this to them and encourage them to contact the front office to insure we have their correct e-mail address. Announcements may also be viewed on the new flat-screen televisions posted by the school's front office. Visit our website for the latest news and updates at www.charlestoncollegiate.org. |
2010 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
|
|
Saturday, May 22nd
We are honored to announce that Ted Turner will serve as our commencement speaker. Mr. Turner is chairman of Turner Enterprises, Inc., a private company that also works with Mr. Turner's charitable interests that include the United Nations Foundation, Nuclear Threat Initiative, and the Turner Foundation, among others.
At Mr. Turner's suggestion, he will be interviewed by a senior class member as part of the commencement ceremony, rather than deliver a commencement address. Graduating senior Will Northcut has been selected by the faculty to conduct the interview.

SENIOR SYMPOSIUM

|
This Week! (May 18th and 19th) CCS's Senior Symposium is May 18 and 19; you can find the program for it here. The Symposium is the culmination of the year-long Senior Exhibition process, during which each senior pursued a topic of personal interest. During the Symposium, the seniors will present the results of their investigations, as well as share the "product" they created as they sought to answer an essential question which they devised. Topics range from the meaning of happiness to the impact of the beauty industry on young women to the value of graffiti to how to run a successful soccer-related retail business.
We hope you will join us for this exciting event! Please contact Jean Pendleton with any questions.

Yearbooks Are Coming This Week!
The 2009-10 yearbook will be presented to the school this Wednesday, May 19th. Each student will receive a copy. A limited number of additional copies are available for purchase for $65: this is a great opportunity for parents (especially senior parents) to have a lasting memento of your child's school year! To reserve your copy today, please contact Ms. Pelzer.
Graduation Photos Strawbridge Studios will be taking seniors' pictures from 8-8:30am in the gym the morning of graduation. The cap-and-gown head shots are available on a prepay basis only; order forms were distributed to seniors last week and are due no later than Saturday morning at the time of the pictures. For general question about graduation portrait orders, please contact Strawbridge Studios customer service at 1-800-326-9080.
Unclaimed Fall Student Portraits and Class Pictures If you ordered a copy of your child's school photo or class picture in the fall and never received it, please stop by the reception desk: there is a box full of Middle/Upper School student and class photos that have not yet been picked up! You may also send your child to pick them up on your behalf.
Prom Pictures A senior class group picture was taken by the Strawbridge Photographer at this year's prom. In addition, a handful of students have individual prom photos that were taken but never ordered. If your child had an individual picture taken or is in the group picture (below) and you would like to order a copy of it, please contact Jaquelin Pelzer this week!

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS FOR MS/US
|
|
Wondering what your Upper or Middle School student is going to do this summer? On our website is a list of summer opportunities for middle and high school students -- including academic, artistic, international, and outdoor experiences. This list has been compiled from information sent to the College Counselor; some brochures are also available for viewing in Ms. Pringle's room. (For more information, please visit the website for the individual programs.)
Click here to view the list posted on the CCS website.

FROM THE ADMISSION OFFICE
|
|
Seeking Host for Exchange Student We are still looking for a family to host a Chinese Exchange Student who will be attending CCS next year. We will offer a $2000 tuition credit for hosting, but we need to hear from you ASAP if you are interested. Please contact Hacker Burr in the Admission Office with questions, or to request a profile of the student.

LOST & FOUND BIN
|
|
All students and parents should check the Lost & Found in the rear of the café weekly. The Lost & Found bin will be emptied every two weeks. If
a child's name is not in uniform clothing (a silver Sharpie works well
for marking dark items), these items will be washed and resold by the
Parents' Association.

H1N1 FLU SYMPTOMS & VACCINE INFORMATION
|
|
We continue to have confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu at the school. To help identify this flu strain's symptoms (vs. regular flu or common cold), please see the H1N1 Flu symptom chart posted to the CCS website.
DHEC Vaccine Clinics DHEC has recommended that we strongly encourage all of our parents to call 953-0090 to schedule vaccination appointments ASAP. The vaccination is available at DHEC free clinics: the sooner our families call, the easier it will be to get an appointment, and the safer the campus will be for all of us. Please call and schedule an appointment for your child to receive a free vaccination ASAP.
School Policy An important reminder about school policy on student illnesses: if a
student is out sick, he/she is only allowed back to school after being
fever/symptom-free for 24 hours without the help of medication.
