SPOTLIGHT . . . ON WINTERIM This year's Winterim had our
Middle and Upper School students spreading near and far, from Fashion Week at Marion Square to the
Galapagos Islands. Students were able to
select from six school-sponsored programs or to create their own Winterim
experience with an internship or focused study. Many used this opportunity to
"test drive" a potential career. Our school programs had students immersed in
the arts and honing their basketball skills. Budding chefs held their own "Iron
Chef" competition and "Mountain Madness" created a new respect for the
outdoors with a camping trip to the mountains of North Carolina.
The impact of this unique learning
experience can be found in the students' comments. Those who sailed aboard the
Tall Ship Spirit of South Carolina came away with an appreciation of teamwork
and the opportunity to better understand their classmates (and the boys learned
how it feels to be seasick!). Others commented on having a different insight
into a career after working and observing for a week. Many pointed to the
satisfaction of working on a project, learning to stay on task and take
direction, making decisions based on data and forming action
plans.
The Winterim experience embodies so
much of what a CCS education strives to be: student-focused, personal, diverse,
hands-on and challenging. Congratulations to all who helped make this week a
success.
