APRIL 6, 2010
Greetings!

The 2010-2011 CCS school calendar is now available on our website. Click here to download the PDF.

Congratulations to Upper School Head Liz Boyd on the birth of Isabel Holland Boyd! Isabel was born on March 28th at 4:58am and weighed 7 lbs. 13 ozs. Both mother and baby are doing just fine!

The night of the 40th Birthday Auction in March, we had two very generous $10,000 challenges that were met and matched through a paddle raise. After looking over the figures from that night, Kendall Reilly in the Business Office noted something remarkable: out of the $20,000 raised to meet the matching challenge, $5,500 of that was donated by the CCS faculty and staff. This is just one example of the special way that the CCS faculty is dedicated to the school's success. Thank you all!

winterim (galapagos)
CCS students in Middle and Upper School traveled near and far for their Winterim experiences during the week before Spring Break. Pictures are starting to trickle in, including this first picture of the trip to the Galapagos Islands, led by Molly Olson and Valerie Shears, on a stopover in Ecuador. (Photo from Lynn Williams.)

If you know of any fellow parents who are not receiving weekly announcements, please forward this to them and encourage them to contact the front office to insure we have their correct e-mail address. Announcements may also be viewed on the new flat-screen televisions posted by the school's front office. Visit our website for the latest news and updates at www.charlestoncollegiate.org.

SPRING PICTURE DAY ON FRIDAY!
photographer2 With "Dress-Up" Day - April 9th Strawbridge Studios will be at Charleston Collegiate this Friday to take special spring portraits of students in all grades. Just like with fall portraits, you will receive a proof of your child's picture a few weeks later and will then have the opportunity to purchase a print package. This is a great opportunity to have a picture taken of your child without having to go to the trouble of visiting a portrait studio. CCS will receive a portion of all photo package sales, so it is also a great fundraiser for the school!

For Spring Portrait Day only, any student interested in having their picture taken may have a non-uniform day and wear their favorite "dress-up" clothes on Friday. Students may wear dresses, skirts, or shorts of an appropriate length or pants or jeans in good repair. They may wear shirts or tops of their choice but may not wear anything with a hood or any hat or head covering.

For more information, please see the flyer from Strawbridge Studios that will be sent home with your child on Wednesday, or contact yearbook advisor Jaquelin Pelzer at 559-5506 x247 or jpelzer@charlestoncollegiate.org.
SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS FOR MS/US
Wondering what your Upper or Middle School student is going to do this summer? On our website is a list of summer opportunities for middle and high school students -- including academic, artistic, international, and outdoor experiences. This list has been compiled from information sent to the College Counselor; some brochures are also available for viewing in Ms. Pringle's room. (For more information, please visit the website for the individual programs.)

CYBERBULLYING SESSION FOR PARENTS
computer Thursday, April 15th at 7:00pm
Social media has captured the interest of adults and children alike. But are there dangers in cyberspace? How is your student using the web and text messaging to create a social circle? What is the impact of bullying in cyberspace? Are their activities exposing your family to legal risks? How do you know what your child is doing online?

Mark your calendar for this important session with Dr. Chip Taylor, psychologist and professor at The Citadel and MUSC. Dr. Taylor has written and published numerous articles in the area of cyberbullying. He will be joined by a CCS student who will show us how to navigate the most often used sites.

FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT
Colorful Cans
Before spring break, CCS students painted large trash cans as part of the Colorful Cans for Clean Cities Sweep. Throughout the next week the cans will be placed in City Parks where they can spread their message of a litter free Charleston. (Pictured below: CCS cans are on middle row with three scenes of effects of pollution and litter.)

FROM THE COLLEGE COUNSELOR

graduationCollege News
A combination S.A.T. / A.C.T. prep class will be held from 9:00am - 1:00pm on Saturday, April 24th. The fee is $50. Please see Mrs. Sharpe for details and registration form.

For more information about any of the above, please contact Mrs. Boyd at eboyd@charlestoncollegiate.org or 559-5506 x229.
LOST & FOUND BIN
All students and parents should check the Lost & Found in the rear of the café weekly. The Lost & Found bin will be emptied every two weeks. If a child's name is not in uniform clothing (a silver Sharpie works well for marking dark items), these items will be washed and resold by the Parents' Association.
H1N1 FLU SYMPTOMS & VACCINE INFORMATION
sickWe continue to have confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu at the school. To help identify this flu strain's symptoms (vs. regular flu or common cold), please see the H1N1 Flu symptom chart posted to the CCS website.

DHEC Vaccine Clinics
DHEC has recommended that we strongly encourage all of our parents to call 953-0090 to schedule vaccination appointments ASAP. The vaccination is available at DHEC free clinics: the sooner our families call, the easier it will be to get an appointment, and the safer the campus will be for all of us. Please call and schedule an appointment for your child to receive a free vaccination ASAP.

School Policy
An important reminder about school policy on student illnesses: if a student is out sick, he/she is only allowed back to school after being fever/symptom-free for 24 hours without the help of medication.
Have a great week,
