Senior Exhibition of Mastery
Each year, Charleston Collegiate students in the 12th grade are required to complete a Senior Exhibition of Mastery. Students
submit a proposed area of concentration and, once approved, begin a year-long
examination of their thesis requiring rigorous research, field exploration,
expert interviews, weekly blogs, and definition of their "essential question". The project must result in output other than a paper: a film, product, campaign,
etc. Students present their final Exhibitions in May.
This week's spotlight is on Christian Elias:
My project is going to be based
on how an artist markets himself, for example, how a 'graffiti artist' who
began as an unknown underground artist, can turn their talent into a steady
career, from painting full-scale murals, to having their graffiti or
underground inspired canvases hung in a gallery that is not known for that
particular type of art.
Using the Middle School stairways
as a canvas, Christian will be creating installations with common themes
showcasing the mural and graffiti styles. In addition to the artistic elements
of his project, Christian has made a (successful) Board presentation to garner
permission for his installation and is developing a project plan to complete
his work during Winterim; a great example of applying interdisciplinary skills
and learning for a "real world" outcome.
