MARCH 1, 2010
Greetings!
Mark your calendars and make plans to join us at school for the Talent Show on Friday, March 5th; Muffins With Mom (for Lower School only) on March 9th; City Project Day on March 11th; and the CCS 40th Birthday Celebration Auction on March 13th. Please see announcements below for more details on most of these events.

If you know of any fellow parents who are not receiving weekly announcements, please forward this to them and encourage them to contact the front office to insure we have their correct e-mail address. Announcements may also be viewed on the new flat-screen televisions posted by the school's front office. Visit our website for the latest news and updates at www.charlestoncollegiate.org.
FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE
Financial Aid
important2The Financial Aid Committee is meeting this week to discuss awards for those who submitted their applications and supporting tax documents by the beginning of last week. Letters will be mailed to these families by the end of this week.

If you plan to apply for financial aid but have not yet done so, we strongly encourage you to complete this process immediately since there is a much higher need for assistance this year than ever before. Please go to http://sss.nais.org to complete the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) and to print the Cover Sheet which must accompany the required tax documents (Form 1040 / W-2s). These documents are to be submitted to SSS this year instead of to the school as in previous years. If you prefer to complete a paper application (PFS), they are available in the CCS Business Office.

If you have any questions, please contact Kendall Reilly at 559-5506 x222.
NATIONAL READING DAY
CCS Joins National Reading Effort on March 5th
booksOn Friday, March 5, CCS will join with efforts throughout the country to "Read Across America".  From 8-9am, the entire school will be engaged in reading.  Middle school students will be reading with pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade, serving as "reading buddies" on this special day.

In May,1997, the NEA created "Read Across America" as a celebration of the importance of reading and selected March 2- Dr. Seuss's birthday- as the annual event date.

Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers.  Be sure to talk with your student about this great event and perhaps treat your young readers to a special Dr. Seuss storytime.
FROM THE ADMISSION OFFICE
Host Family Needed!
globeWe have a Chinese student who is interested in spending his 11th grade year at CCS, but we need a host family in order for him to be able to enroll. Please stop by (or contact) the admission office to take a look at the student's profile, and let us know if you might be interested in hosting.

This would be a great way to bring some worldly perspective into your home, and we are offering a $1000 tuition credit to any family who is willing to play host. Please contact Hacker Burr in the Admission Office if you are interested.

Thanks!
CCS TALENT SHOW
play This Friday!
A CCS Talent Show will be held in the gym on Friday, March 5th from 1:15-3:00pm. Refreshments will be sold to benefit the Jr/Sr Prom Committee. Pizza is $1, soda is $1, and desserts range from $1-2.

The Talent Show is open to students in Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. Parents are invited to attend.

For more information, please contact Ms. Pringle.
FROM THE HEAD OF LOWER SCHOOL
5th Grade Student as Head of School for the Day
Zoe Myers, a 5th Grader in Mrs. Reed's class, will be acting Head of School on Wednesday, March 3rd. This privilege was purchased by her parents at last year's auction.

Zoe has already granted a Dress Down Day on Wednesday. In addition to that, she will be dismissing Middle and Upper School 5 minutes early that day. (Lower School will have 5 minutes added to their recess time.)

Thank you Debra and Tom Myers for your support of our annual auction!
CITY PROJECT DAY: ALL-SCHOOL EVENT
Thursday, March 11
city projectOn Thursday, March 11, from 11:00am to 3:00pm CCS will be having its City Project Contest. The school has been divided into ten teams consisting of students from 1st grade through 12th grade, and each of these teams has invented a city.

The teams will be making a presentation of their city along with a city plan, a banner, a city map, a model representing their city and their city game which all the teams will play. For their presentations, the teams are creating power points, brochures, presentation boards, and promotional videos. In addition, the groups will be feeding themselves the regional dishes that they have invented for lunch that day.

Parents are invited to come and observe the contests and see the students' work. For more information, please contact Mr. Neale.

FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT
Haiti Houses
houseWe still have lots of student-created pins and magnets to sell for the recent "Haiti Houses" project. They can be purchased at the front desk, or stop by the art room to see more selection.

We are alsp looking for help as to good sites that would allow the students to offer them for sale after school or on weekends. Please send any suggestions to Mrs. Shears.

FROM THE COLLEGE COUNSELOR

Congratulations to the following seniors for their recent college acceptances: Shan Fang - CofC, Clemson, Massachusettes School of Pharmacy and Medicine;
Emily Gepford - Bridgewater College, USC Aiken, Charleston Southern; Christian Elias - USC Beaufort; Frances Bailey - USC; Will Northcut - Savannah College of Art & Design.

SAT/ACT Prep Course
A combination S.A.T. / A.C.T. prep class will be held from 9:00am - 1:00pm on Saturday, April 24th. The fee is $50. Please see Mrs. Sharpe for details and registration form.

LOST & FOUND BIN
All students and parents should check the Lost & Found in the rear of the café weekly. The Lost & Found bin will be emptied every two weeks. If a child's name is not in uniform clothing (a silver Sharpie works well for marking dark items), these items will be washed and resold by the Parents' Association.
H1N1 FLU SYMPTOMS & VACCINE INFORMATION
sickWe continue to have confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu at the school. To help identify this flu strain's symptoms (vs. regular flu or common cold), please see the H1N1 Flu symptom chart posted to the CCS website.

DHEC Vaccine Clinics
DHEC has recommended that we strongly encourage all of our parents to call 953-0090 to schedule vaccination appointments ASAP. The vaccination is available at DHEC free clinics: the sooner our families call, the easier it will be to get an appointment, and the safer the campus will be for all of us. Please call and schedule an appointment for your child to receive a free vaccination ASAP.

School Policy
An important reminder about school policy on student illnesses: if a student is out sick, he/she is only allowed back to school after being fever/symptom-free for 24 hours without the help of medication.
Have a great week,
