Senior Exhibition of Mastery
Each year, Charleston Collegiate students in the 12th grade are required to complete a Senior Exhibition of Mastery. Students
submit a proposed area of concentration and, once approved, begin a year-long
examination of their thesis requiring rigorous research, field exploration,
expert interviews, weekly blogs, and definition of their "essential question". The project must result in output other than a paper: a film, product, campaign,
etc. Students present their final Exhibitions in May.
This week's spotlight is on Laney
Miller. Laney is exploring the changing images of beauty and what they mean to
women of all ages. In her blog, Laney writes:
I've decided to base my Senior
Exhibition topic on "beauty stereotypes." What are beauty stereotypes? Do beauty
stereotypes exist in American culture? Does the yearning to fit one definition
of beautiful shape our lives? Any one of these questions can be answered with a
simple yes or no, but my plan is to analyze each of these inquires backwards
forwards and upside-down until I reach a valid and adequate
conclusion. I'm noticing that it is becoming increasingly difficult to approach the
start of my research with a completely open mind. It's inevitable that I would
have opinions coming into this project, but it seems that I need to shed these
opinions completely in order to reach somewhat or an answer to my essential
question. My conclusion needs to be not reflective of my previous ideals but
rather the outcome of what I have learned in the process. Can't
wait!
