DEC. 14, 2009
Greetings!

There is a lot going on this week! While Middle & Upper School students are busy taking (and studying for) their 1st semester exams, the Lower School is gearing up for a Holiday Concert (with Middle School singers) on Tuesday night and a PJ party to end the semester on Thursday. For details about all of this week's happenings, please read the announcements below.

Thanks to the many students, teachers, and parents who came out for the Varsity basketball rematch against Porter Gaud on Friday night! Both teams played hard, and the Varsity Boys emerged triumphant from a very exciting game with a final 2 pt. lead! Both teams will play in a tournament at Porter Gaud this weekend. Go, Sundevils!!

There will be no lunch service on Thursday, December 17th. Please remember to pack your Lower School child a lunch for that day. If you ordered lunch for your MS/US child for Thursday, the 17th, your order has been cancelled and your account was credited.

If you're looking for uniform clothing, this is your week! The Parents' Association is hosting a gently-used uniform sale Tuesday night before and after the Holiday Concert. Also, the Educational Outfitters sale at their Mt. Pleasant store goes through Saturday. See announcements below for more information on both of these events.

If you know of any fellow parents who are not receiving weekly announcements, please forward this to them and encourage them to contact the front office to insure we have their correct e-mail address. Announcements may also be viewed on the new flat-screen televisions posted by the school's front office. Visit our website for the latest news and updates at www.charlestoncollegiate.org.

FROM THE HEADS OF MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL
Exam Information (Dec. 14-17)
testingThe schedule for 1st semester exams has been posted to the CCS website. Click here for the schedule and other important exam information for MS/US parents.

Exams run this week from 9:00-11:00 and from 12:00-2:00. Please consult the exam schedule to see when your child takes a specific subject exam. If your child does not have an exam scheduled during an exam session, then he or she does NOT need to come to school. Students should be picked up promptly after an exam session is over. If this is not possible, after school care will be provided in the library beginning at 2:15 and ending at 4:00. Students should plan on bringing lunch or snacks. No lunch service will be provided and students will not be allowed to leave from 11:00-12:00 for safety reasons. If your child is sick prior to an exam, please call either Liz Boyd or Gretchen Batalis prior to the start of the exam session to discuss an alternative.

If you have any questions, please contact Liz Boyd or Gretchen Batalis.
LOWER SCHOOL HOLIDAY CONCERT

FROM THE HEAD OF LOWER SCHOOL
The Act of Giving for the Holidays
pj party2Instead of having gift exchanges in classrooms this year, the Parents' Association has decided to participate in gift-giving to local children in foster homes. We would like each of our students to give a foster child a new pair of pajamas.

Each student will be given the gender, name, age, and size of a foster child. Please send in a new, unwrapped pair of pajamas, with tags on, by Tuesday, December 15th.

On Thursday, December 17th all Lower School students may wear PJ's to school. Each class's room parent is arranging with the teacher to celebrate our families' generosity to Foster children in the Charleston area. This "PJ Movie" time  will take place before normal pick-up at 2:40. Thank you, from all the Lower School Faculty, for making this project possible!
FROM THE PARENTS' ASSOCIATION

YOUTH RUGBY HOLIDAY CAMP
December 28-30th
Come try out our newest youth sport, Youth Rugby! The City of Charleston will be hosting a Youth Rugby Holiday Camp, from December 28 through December 30, 2009. The camp will be held from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM, Monday through Wednesday, at Hampton Park in downtown Charleston. The camp is going to be held on the fields near McMahon Playground, at the intersection of Rutledge Avenue and Moultrie Street.

The camp is open to boys and girls, ages 4 through 18 years of age.  Instructors from our local rugby club, the Charleston Outlaws, will be on hand to teach the fundamentals of rugby. This is an excellent opportunity for your child(ren) to check out this new and exciting sport before registration opens for our inaugural spring season.

The cost of the camp is $30, and all campers will receive a shirt. To sign up, please stop by the City of Charleston West Ashley Office, located at 1360 Orange Grove Road. The last day to register will be December 22, so please hurry in to sign up!

If you have any questions regarding the camp or the upcoming youth rugby program, please contact Doyle Best at bestd@ci.charleston.sc.us or at (843)769-8281.
H1N1 FLU SYMPTOMS & VACCINE INFORMATION
sickWe continue to have confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu at the school. To help identify this flu strain's symptoms (vs. regular flu or common cold), please see the H1N1 Flu symptom chart posted to the CCS website.

DHEC Vaccine Clinics
DHEC has recommended that we strongly encourage all of our parents to call 953-0090 to schedule vaccination appointments ASAP. The vaccination is available at DHEC free clinics: the sooner our families call, the easier it will be to get an appointment, and the safer the campus will be for all of us. Please call and schedule an appointment for your child to receive a free vaccination ASAP.

School Policy
An important reminder about school policy on student illnesses: if a student is out sick, he/she is only allowed back to school after being fever/symptom-free for 24 hours without the help of medication.
LOST & FOUND
All students and parents should check the Lost & Found in the rear of the café weekly. The Lost & Found bin will be emptied every two weeks. If a child's name is not in uniform clothing (a silver Sharpie works well for marking dark items), these items will be washed and resold by the Parents' Association.
CCS WRITING GALLERY
writing Online Writing Project (Ongoing)
In CCS's online gallery, the Charleston Collegiate Collection, we are collecting various types of writings and artwork (even audio and video) from all students, teachers, alumni, parents, and friends of CCS. On October 20 the National Gallery of Writing and our local gallery, opened to the world, and you can still be a part of it! We invite you to pick a piece of writing that matters to you and contribute it to The Charleston Collegiate Collection Gallery. Each person may only make one submission per gallery. Writers keep the copyrights of all work submitted.

Established by NCTE, the National Gallery of Writing, local writing galleries like ours, and the National Day of Writing highlight the remarkable variety of writing in which we engage today, provide a collection for research on whether writing today has risen to new highs or sunk to new lows, and help NCTE help others to write better.

Happy Writing!!! Please contact Erica Woodward at ewoodward@charlestoncollegiate.org if you have any questions.
