NOV. 9, 2009
Greetings!

The 2008-2009 CCS Annual Report is ready! In an effort to cut costs and be more environmentally conscious, this year's Annual Report has been posted to the CCS website as a PDF, which can be accessed here.

Congratulations to Mrs. Virginia Reed on the birth of her baby! Barrow Huger Reed was born on November 4th. He weighed 6 pounds and 15 ounces and is 19.25 inches long. Momma and baby are both happy and healthy!

baby shower
Congratulations also to Hunter Albers, who won the "Guess the Baby" game in 5th grade!

Senior Jordan de Jong has been named the Kiawah Seabrook Exchange Club's "Youth of the Month". Jordan will receive an award at the Exchange Club dinner on Wednesday, November 18th. Congratulations, Jordan!

Several students from CCS participated in the SCISA Art Show at Pinewood Prep on Friday, where Will Northcut (12th grade) and Marlowe Evans (10th grade) were given Honorable Mention Ribbons. Congratulations, Will and Marlowe!

If you know of any fellow parents who are not receiving weekly announcements, please forward this to them and encourage them to contact the front office to insure we have their correct e-mail address. Announcements may also be viewed on the new flat-screen televisions posted by the school's front office. Visit our website for the latest news and updates at www.charlestoncollegiate.org.
H1N1 FLU SYMPTOMS & VACCINE INFORMATION
sickWe continue to have confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu at the school. To help identify this flu strain's symptoms (vs. regular flu or common cold), please see the H1N1 Flu symptom chart posted to the CCS website.

DHEC Vaccine Clinics
DHEC has recommended that we strongly encourage all of our parents to call 953-0090 to schedule vaccination appointments ASAP. The vaccination is available at DHEC free clinics: the sooner our families call, the easier it will be to get an appointment, and the safer the campus will be for all of us. Please call and schedule an appointment for your child to receive a free vaccination ASAP.

School Policy
An important reminder about school policy on student illnesses: if a student is out sick, he/she is only allowed back to school after being fever/symptom-free for 24 hours without the help of medication.

UPPER SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE OUTING
Fields to Families
On Saturday, Nov. 7th, three Upper Schoolers -- Caroline Gibson, Stuart Bowers, and Sarah Smith -- and Ms. Pendleton "gleaned" at Rosebank Farm on John's Island. They were volunteering with Fields to Families, an organization that works to ease hunger in the Lowcountry by gathering nutritious crops from generous farmers and community gardeners. The organization then distributes the harvest to agencies such as Meals on Wheels, local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and churches. The CCS contingent spent the morning picking mustard greens - boxes and boxes of mustard greens! gleaning

UPPER SCHOOL WINTERIM CATALOG
Now Available Online
winterimThe Upper School Winterim 2009-10 catalog is now available! We are very excited by the variety of course offerings this year, particularly the opportunity for the ninth grade which has been made possible by a generous grant to the school (described on p. 3 of the catalog). While all ninth graders will be participating in this course, we hope that parents of students in grades 10-12 will read the catalog and talk with their children about which option is best for them. One new option this year is a "Community Service Internship" where students can plan their own volunteer work for a week (p. 7). Please note that the registration deadline is November 18, at which point a down payment of 50% is also due.
CCS WRITING GALLERY
writing Online Writing Project (Ongoing)
In CCS's online gallery, the Charleston Collegiate Collection, we are collecting various types of writings and artwork (even audio and video) from all students, teachers, alumni, parents, and friends of CCS. On October 20 the National Gallery of Writing and our local gallery, opened to the world, and you can still be a part of it! We invite you to pick a piece of writing that matters to you and contribute it to The Charleston Collegiate Collection Gallery. Each person may only make one submission per gallery. Writers keep the copyrights of all work submitted.

Established by NCTE, the National Gallery of Writing, local writing galleries like ours, and the National Day of Writing highlight the remarkable variety of writing in which we engage today, provide a collection for research on whether writing today has risen to new highs or sunk to new lows, and help NCTE help others to write better.

Happy Writing!!! Please contact Erica Woodward at ewoodward@charlestoncollegiate.org if you have any questions.
