OCTOBER 26, 2009
Greetings!

Congratulations to Mr. Neale and the cast and crew of "Isabella's Madness" for two great performances this weekend! See the announcement below for a full cast list and information on ordering a DVD of the play.

fall play

All students and parents should check the Lost & Found in the rear of the café weekly. Beginning this week, Lost & Found bin will be emptied every two weeks. If a child's name is not in uniform clothing (a silver Sharpie works well for marking dark items), these items will be washed and resold by the Parents' Association.

If you ordered a photo package of your child's school picture, please see the Yearbook Staff announcement below for information about photo package distribution. Friday, October 30th, is also the last day of the "early bird" discount for yearbook ads: if you'd like to purchase an ad for your child or your business, be sure to take advantage of the reduced prices while they last!

Senior Kate Miller's second student journalism column of the year appeared in the Oct. 22nd issue of the Post & Courier. Click here to read the column online. Congratulations, Kate!

If you know of any fellow parents who are not receiving weekly announcements, please forward this to them and encourage them to contact the front office to insure we have their correct e-mail address. Announcements may also be viewed on the new flat-screen televisions posted by the school's front office. Visit our website for the latest news and updates at www.charlestoncollegiate.org.
H1N1 FLU VACCINE INFORMATION FROM DHEC
important2DHEC has recommended that we strongly encourage all of our parents to call 953-0090 to schedule vaccination appointments ASAP. The vaccination is available at DHEC free clinics: the sooner our families call, the easier it will be to get an appointment, and the safer the campus will be for all of us. Please call and schedule an appointment for your child to receive a free vaccination ASAP.

We have also posted some important information regarding H1N1 "Swine Flu" and South Carolina schools from DHEC (SC's Dept. of Health and Environmental Control) to the Important Links for Parents page on our website. Additional information has been mailed to you from CCS and DHEC regarding this health situation that is affecting our community.

An important reminder about school policy on student illnesses: if a student is out sick, he/she is only allowed back to school after being fever/symptom-free for 24 hours without the help of medication.

UPPER SCHOOL WINTERIM CATALOG
Now Available Online
winterimThe Upper School Winterim 2009-10 catalog is now available! We are very excited by the variety of course offerings this year, particularly the opportunity for the ninth grade which has been made possible by a generous grant to the school (described on p. 3 of the catalog). While all ninth graders will be participating in this course, we hope that parents of students in grades 10-12 will read the catalog and talk with their children about which option is best for them. One new option this year is a "Community Service Internship" where students can plan their own volunteer work for a week (p. 7). Please note that the registration deadline is November 18, at which point a down payment of 50% is also due.

NATIONAL DAY OF WRITING & CCS WRITING GALLERY
writing CCS Online Writing Project (Ongoing)
Students in all grades had a great time participating in the National Day of Writing on October 20. Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools each had a division-wide storyboard, where any student or teacher could write a sentence to contribute to a group story. These stories will be posted to the CCS online gallery in the coming days.

In CCS's online gallery, The Charleston Collegiate Collection, we are collecting various types of writings and artwork (even audio and video) from all students, teachers, alumni, parents, and friends of CCS. On October 20 the National Gallery of Writing and our local gallery, opened to the world, and you can still be a part of it! We invite you to pick a piece of writing that matters to you and contribute it to The Charleston Collegiate Collection Gallery. Each person may only make one submission per gallery.

For those having trouble getting started, NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) has created Tips for Writers. For the curious, some sample writings are available. Before posting, you may also want to refer to the Gallery Guidelines. Also, as of right now, children under 13 cannot contribute writings without parental consent. You can find the 'Parental Consent Form' here.

Writers keep the copyrights of all work submitted, so if NCTE wants to do something with the writing(s) you post, they will ask you first and get your permission. Established by NCTE, the National Gallery of Writing, local writing galleries like ours, and the National Day of Writing highlight the remarkable variety of writing in which we engage today, provide a collection for research on whether writing today has risen to new highs or sunk to new lows, and help NCTE help others to write better.

Happy Writing!!! Please contact Erica Woodward at ewoodward@charlestoncollegiate.org if you have any questions.
