FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear CCS Parents and Guardians,
For the past four years, Charleston Collegiate
School has taken annual proactive
steps to ensure the well-being and safety of your children while on CCS grounds
by having Charleston County Sheriff's Department police officers and their K-9
unit conduct regular illegal substance searches on our campus. Yesterday, as a
result of one of these routine searches, illegal substances were found in the
vehicles of two CCS students, and those two students were arrested. After a thorough
review of the two cases, the CCS Discipline Committee has recommended to me
that these students not be allowed to return to CCS in accordance with the illegal
substance policy stated on page 21 of the CCS Student/Parent Handbook (see policy
below). Although I am saddened by these events, I affirm the recommendation of
the Discipline Committee.
Of course, we regret if any of our students were troubled or
alarmed by the sight of police cars and dogs on our campus, but we ask that you
understand that the safety and well-being of your children depends on the
vigilance of our faculty and staff. We cannot tolerate illegal substances on
our campus.
I will address this topic at the Parent Coffee next Wednesday,
but should you have any questions or concerns before then, please do not
hesitate to call or e-mail me.
Sincerely,
J. Robert Shirley, PhD
Head of School
CCS Alcohol and Illegal Substances Policy
The Charleston Collegiate community believes
strongly that to accomplish educational objectives, students' minds must be
clear and focused on learning. The use of chemical substances is not compatible
with the accomplishment of these goals. For this reason, CCS will take
proactive steps when made aware of a student's use of chemical substances to
ensure that the individual and the school community are not threatened or
tarnished by that student's use. The
division head will handle appropriate action. CCS may require a drug test
within 24 hours of parental notification at parents' expense. A copy of the results
must be provided to the division head. Students need to be responsible
citizens and uphold and advance the school's good name by not using or
possessing illegal drugs at any school-related event. Searches for illegal
substances may be conducted.
