MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
SIBOR REALTORS® CONVERGE ON WASHINGTON

GEORGIANNA DIAZ

Your SIBOR leadership team joined thousands of Realtors from across the nation for the National Association of Realtors® Midyear Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in Washington, D.C, May, 14-19, 2012. We attended numerous committee and informational meetings, scoured the trade show for new tools and met with many of our current and future MLS vendors.

On May 17th at NAR's 'Rally to Protect the American Dream,' over 13,000  Realtors from every state in the country and thousands more over the internet joined members of Congress on the grounds of the Washington Monument to make their voices heard on behalf of homeowners, real estate investors, and those who aspire to homeownership.

NAR's President Moe Veissi kicked off the Rally by saying, "Realtors® know that homeownership is an investment in our collective futures, and we're here today to protect the American Dream of homeownership. Homeownership and investment in real estate impacts families, communities, small businesses and the nation's economy in a very meaningful way. Today, we're proud to be showing the country that homeownership matters."

I was joined in Washington by several SIBOR colleagues including president-elect Traci Cangiano, secretary/treasurer Laird Klein, CEO Sandy Krueger, SIBOR Director Dil Gillani, NAR Committee members George K. Wonica, George S. Wonica, Sari Kingsley, Dawn Carpenter, and John Vernazza. We had opportunities to meet with Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congressman Grimm to advocate for better access to affordable financing, reform of the secondary mortgage market, improved liquidity in residential and commercial lending, reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, and preservation of the tax benefits associated with homeownership.

We came to Washington to make our leaders aware of the vital role that real estate plays in both the long and short-term health of this country. Speakers at the rally talked about how homeownership issues affect individuals, communities, small businesses, and the nation. Rally speakers included NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun and Realtors representing all segments of the Realtor family. In addition, almost 20 members of Congress, including some who are Realtors, were on the scene.

SIBOR Directors Claire Bisignano-Chesnoff and Greg Sokol, and Realtors Harold Chesnoff and Rosa Marciano rode the Realtor train from NJ to Washington and back the day of the Rally to participate in the festivities.

I urge each and every one of you to continue to make your voices heard, to engage our elected officials in on-going dialogue to ensure that all Americans can realize the dream of homeownership.

Stay involved. Stay committed. Stay the course.

TOPICAL NEWS
WHERE REAL ESTATE MEETS POLITICS
real estate and politician sign
A look at former City Hall politicos who wield big influence in the industry.

With Mayor Michael Bloomberg nearing the end of his third (and final) term, it's no surprise that many of his top aides have now caught a case of government fatigue and fled to the private sector. And a high percentage of those who've worked for the pro-development mayor have been tapped for jobs in the real estate industry.

While hiring a former administration official (or former City Council member) doesn't get a real estate firm the keys to City Hall, it can provide valuable insight when it comes to navigating the ins and outs of government.
