Greetings!

Amazingly we are heading toward the 7th annual "FiSHing for a Cure" gala to benefit FacioScapuloHumeral (FSH) Muscular Dystrophy research.  Due to your support we have been able to fund pilot projects which have been able to grow into major studies supported by the National Institutes of Health!  Researchers you helped us to fund, have become major leaders in the field of FSH research and have gained international recognition for their work.

This year has been a stand out for FSH research!  In March, one of the largest NIH grants ever to be  awarded for FSH research was awarded to the collaborative team led by our Seattle researchers.   In August and in October research papers were published by these same researchers which demonstrated a major breakthrough in the understanding of the molecular pathology of FSH.

FSH research has made huge strides in the past 7 years - this progress is largely a result of the research you helped us to fund.
With greater understanding of the underlying genetic mechanism responsible for FSH, the work to develop a therapeutic intervention now begins.

Thank you so much for your support,
Terry Colella
Notes from the Researcher Dan Miller

Friends of FSH Research dollars have been hard at work and recently helped fund several fundamental discoveries in FSHD research. The most recent manuscript titled "Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy: Incomplete Suppression of a Retrotransposed Gene" shows                   expression of the FSHD disease-causing gene (DUX4) in a subset of muscle cells and suggests mechanisms for how muscle may be weakened by bursts of expression of the toxic protein.

Furthermore, Seattle based scientists converted skin cells from FSHD-affected volunteers to embryonic stem-like cells and demonstrated disease-related differences in gene regulation as the cells begin to differentiate. Both findings suggest new directions for research into disease causing mechanisms, and potential targets for therapies.

Friends of FSH Research founded in 2004 with the mission to stimulate and support Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy research.  We believe that with adequate research funding and support a treatment or cure to FSH is possible.
