The Italian South Village
Saturday July 9th, 2011 at 1pm
The South Village, the district south of Washington Square Park, is what most people picture when they think of Greenwich Village. Today much of the charm of the South Village comes from its many original Italian businesses, some started over 100 years ago and now run by the third and fourth generations.
The full story of the South Village includes African-Americans, Irish, and Italian priests, saints, shop-owners, politicians, and mobsters. Join Joyce Gold History Tours to explore this historic area that has played a role in films like Godfather II, Raging Bull, Serpico, and Moonstruck.
High Line Park Elevates Meatpacking District
Sunday July 10th, 2011 at 1pm
Hundreds of years ago Native Americans used this shoreline as a trading post. Over time, the trading changed from fish and pelts to shipping, meatpacking, dairy wholesaling, and light industry. Raw materials and finished goods moved back and forth via a unique freight train called the High Line, which wound its way high above the streets and through large buildings.
Today, the High Line serves as an international model for the reuse of transportation infrastructure. After hearing about its history and design, tour-takers can enjoy climbing the slow steps to see this amazing woodland and grassland.
This tour uncovers:
· The never-reached destination of Titanic
· "Death Avenue Cowboy" and the overhead railroad
· The Herman Melville and e e cummings connection
· When Bastille Day and Marie Antoinette came to New York
Cost: $15 ($3 discount for seniors 62+)
