 01 July 2011

Dear GVCCC Members and Friends,

We would like to update you on recent developments regarding St. Vincent's. This past week, the New York City Planning Commission held a public scoping meeting where they accepted testimony from local elected offices, activists and business organizations. We sent the Commission testimony outlining why we support the plan. Our testimony specifically articulates why the Chamber believes the plan will create quality jobs and is essential to the health of the local economy. Read the full text here.

Also, we would like to remind all of our members that posting events to the calendar is one of your many benefits. We have attached instructions on how to do so below. If we all share our events, the summer is sure to be anything but dull! If you prefer for us to post your events, you can email patricia@villagechelsea.com.

Be sure to scroll down for other upcoming events and a chance to win....well, we will let you find out.

Best,

GVCCC

The Blue Note Presents Sophistafunk

The Blue Note is a highly respected jazz club located in Greenwich Village. Since 1981, the club has hosted many talented musicians and performers, and has gained a lot of media attention from New York daily newspapers like the New York Times and International Travel Magazines. Known for its exciting jazz music, the club does not discriminate against other genres of music. Recently, the club introduced the Monday Night Series and the bi-weekly Late Night Groove Series to showcase soul, hip-hop, R&B and funk artists from around the Greenwich area.

The Late Night Groove Series continues with Sophistafunk (Adam Gold, Jack Brown, Emanuel Washington), a very talented group that combines spoken-word artistry, old-school hip-hop, and funky rhythms to create interesting and fun music to listen to.

When: July 2nd, 12:30am

Price: $10

St. Vincent's Update

On June 28th, the New York City Planning Commission held a public scoping meeting for the Saint Vincent's Redevelopment plan. During the meeting, Committee members looked at the development plan carefully and received testimony from interested and involved agencies as well as the public.

According to Tom Gray , Executive Director at the GVCCC "Since the closing of Saint Vincent's Medical Center over a year ago, the local economy has suffered severely, and over 30 small businesses have closed. There is a lack of medical care in the area, jobs have been lost, and the remaining businesses are struggling to survive. The proposed plan to invest more than $110 million to transform the Saint Vincent's O'Toole Building into a comprehensive, free standing emergency room will not only provide important medical care to the community, but will also bring 1,000 quality construction jobs, and 400 other full-time permanent jobs to the area.

That is why, after reviewing the proposal, The Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce fully supports the North-Shore-LIJ Health System and Rudin Management Plan for Saint Vincent's Hospital."

We will try to keep you posted on any new developments in regards to this and other advocacy issues, so keep checking back.

If you wish to support the proposal and haven't already done so, click here to sign a copy of our support letter, which is intended to be sent to your elected officials.
