Hello Members and Friends,
Can you believe its nearly Thanksgiving? The year has flown and we wish you all a wonderful, short week and a great holiday. Please note, the GVCCC office will be closed on Thursday and Friday November 25th and 26th. Last week's food drive and mixer was a great success. Every day the NYPD protect and serve our community in countless ways. RSVP for the annual "Cop of the Year Awards" Safe Cities, Safe Streets luncheon being held on December 8 and help honor them for their bravery and service. More details below. We are currently planning the 2011 calendar including 6 Coffee & Cards, 6 evening mixers and much more. Have a topic you want to know about (restaurant grading, social media) or a politician you want to hear from? Let us now today! Also email us if you are interested in hosting an event in 2011. Pop-up Cafe Opportunity for Restaurants
| Calling all Chamber Member Restaurants! Do you operate a restaurant in an area where sidewalk cafes are not allowed? The Pop-up Cafes Pilot Program from the Department of Transportation (DOT) might be just the solution.
Modeled after a program in Safe Francisco, New York completed its first Pop-up cafe on Pearl Street and its been a great success. Click here for photos of the Pearl Street operation. Applications are due by December 3, 2010 and require support from your local community board. Here are some of the details.
Pop-up cafes:
- Can accommodate more than one restaurant or café on a block
- Are considered public space, i.e. they can be used by anybody, not only the restaurant/café clientele.
- Cafe hours are customarily limited for early evening closure (e.g. around 8 p.m.), and the furniture must be stored each night inside or locked up outside.
- People may order food from the food establishment inside and bring out their food/drinks themselves. They also can order inside and have someone bring out the fare when ready, but there's no order taking, i.e., no waiter service, outside.
- No alcohol can be served.
- Must provide a barrier on the street side, which provides safety from passing traffic.
Don't forget - you must have the support from your local community board with your application and applications are due December 3! For an application and more information please click here.
If you have questions, please contact the Chamber at 212.337.5923.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner Hosted by Hudson Guild
| |
Tonight, Tuesday, November 23rd, Hudson Guild will feed more than 200 of Chelsea's neediest residents at their 8th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
Each year, individuals and Chelsea-area restaurants and businesses have donated enough food to feed a crowd of more than 200 Chelsea residents in need. This is truly an event that highlights the generosity of not only the volunteers, donors, and staff involved with the Guild on a regular basis, but of those in the Chelsea community like you.
Hudson Guild has been working hard to provide needed social services to the Chelsea community since 1895. They serve more than 14,000 people each year through programs like daycare, hot meals for senior citizens, low-cost professional counseling, community arts programs and recreational programming for teens.
Please consider making an in-kind or monetary donation to help put together a great Thanksgiving meal for the community.
Interested in lending a hand or donating? Click here.
