North Shore-LIJ and VillageCare to Open Urgent Care Center | |
On August 26, North Shore Long-Island Jewish Medical Centers announced a partnership with VillageCare, a long time Chamber Champion, to open a 24 hour/ 7 day Urgent Care Center. The Center will be located at 121-A West 20th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. Together they will offer a wide range of services that will help to replace some of the services lost with the closing of St. Vincent Hospital. Click here to read the full press release.
Until our neighborhoods have access to a full-service hospital with an emergency room to fill the void left by St. Vincent's, this facility will be an extremely important component of the local healthcare delivery in our communities.
According to Community Board 2, the community boards are working with local elected officials and other stakeholders in launching community health needs assessment, to help determine the level and kind of services to be offered this facility, as well as aggregate information that we hope will contribute to our case for a full-service hospital. |

The 3/50 Project: Saving Our Local, Independent Retailers | The Chamber has been flooded with calls from businesses looking for support and assistance in these difficult times. We were recently made aware of the 3/50 Project and attended a seminar by founder Cinda Baxter.
The idea:
What if each of us picked 3 local, independent retailers that we didn't want to see disappear and we each spent $50 of our already budgeted dollars in these stores?
We found out:
If half of the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned, independent businesses it would generate $42.6 billion in revenue.
For every $100 spent in local, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national retailer whose not based in New York, only $43 returns to the local economy. If you spend it online, nothing comes back home.
