Hospital's Closing is Flat-lining Small Business | |
On June 29, the Chamber hosted a small business assistance forum for businesses affected by the closing of St. Vincent's Hospital. After surveying the area for several weeks, talking to proprietors and managers, we can link nearly 20 business closings to St. Vincent's. We also found that many more area businesses are in danger of shutting their doors.
With sales down anywhere between 20% and 50%, foot traffic at an all time low, and a vacant boarded up facility in the middle, the neighborhood feels more like the outskirts of a city, rather than the bustling heart of Greenwich Village.
Bringing together local businesses and representatives from city and federal agencies, banks, and community leaders, the forum creating a dialogue focusing on:
- How business has been affected by the closing,
- available resources and programs to help weather this change, and
- the long-term outlook and strategies.
Chamber Executive Director, Lauren Danziger and local proprietor Ann Freedman of the Firestore talked about the potential of a "Shop Local" movement. "I've seen it at work in other communities in this country and I feel Greenwich Village is a perfect place for local business owners and residents alike to try a program like this. Shopping at the local stores for gifts, coffee and other items, keeps the economy local, the community supported", says Danziger. Freedman urged Greenwich Avenue businesses to band together and shop at each other's stores.
The Chamber is now working with the Department of Small Business Services and NYC Business Solutions, along with local elected officials and the US Small Business Administration to ensure that businesses in need get the needed education, and can link up with lenders and other resources.

The forum was sponsored by NYU's Office of Government and Community Affairs and hosted by the LGBT Community Center. |
