Ask the Borough President Luncheon Summary

On May 24th, Manhattan Borough President Stringer addressed an audience of Chamber members and guests as a community advocate for small business interests in our local neighborhoods as well as the borough at large. Borough President Stringer spoke about exacting change to support our small business community through its current struggles, and into the future.

The NYU 2031 Expansion was a main focus of the luncheon. The Borough President spoke of necessity for the institution to grow, and at the same time, recognized that such growth should not be at the cost or displacement of existing small business. NYU, like other large New York institutions is an economic engine for the City, and should be recognized as such. Through the creation of the Borough President's Task Force on NYU's expansion, he  believes that all parties involved have and can continue to work together to develop a strategy that "blends the hopes and goals" of the existing community residents and businesses with that of the University.  He praised NYU's efforts to involve the community and plan far in advance so that the parties involved can identify any issues early on and provide effective solutions.

With regard to the City Charter revisions put forth by the Mayor, Borough President Stringer is calling for amendments such as an independent planning office and the addition of an experienced urban planner to each Community Board.

The devastating closure of St. Vincent's hospital was another hot topic.  A terrible loss  to the community, Mr. Stringer expressed outrage that local officials were not told of the problems the hospital faced earlier when they might have been able to be effective in saving the hospital. The Borough President stressed the need to be proactive and assess the damage that the closing of Saint Vincent's will have on the small businesses located near the hospital.  He praised the Chamber's efforts with regard to the upcoming small business assistance forum, aimed at doing just that.

Tony Juliano, chairman of the GVCCC, asked about the Borough President's position on the proposed paid sick leave bill. Mr. Juliano shared his concern regarding the unnecessary burden that it puts upon small business owners and the resistance of the Council to amend the bill to create a shared burden of cost between the workers, City and employers. Mr. Stringer, who noted his full support of the bill, said that it will most likely be further altered and improved.  He added that all parties involved should seek a balanced compromise, because he believes that the sick leave bill is needed to protect the workers of our City.  While The Borough President fully supports the paid sick leave effort, he offered his help to the Chamber is ensuring that our member's concerns are addressed and the bill is one which the Chamber can endorse.

The Chamber recognizes and appreciates Borough President Stringer's efforts and support on behalf of our City's small businesses, and we thank him for his time.
