GVCCC Member Happenings!
Events, Discounts, Resources
3 May 2010

Hello Members and Friends,

We at the Chamber hope this newsletter finds you well and successful!

Be sure to RSVP for our upcoming events including our first ever "Coffee & Cards", a morning business card exchange that we hope will bring some fresh faces and ideas into your world.  In addition, we will host a luncheon with Manhattan Borough President, Scott M. Stringer, at which he will answer your questions about hot topics like St. Vincent's and the NYU expansion plan.

The City Council will hold a hearing on the re-introduced Paid Sick Leave bill, INT 0097 on May 11.  Below we have included a link to the bill and information on how you can make your voice heard in the effort to prevent the bill from passing in its current form.

Our calendar is constantly growing, so if you have an idea for an event or a speaker based on a pressing local issue, send us an email.  We are always interested in your thoughts and ideas, and making the Chamber the best resource for you and your business.

Best,

Expand Your Network & Grow your Business

Join the Chamber at our first Coffee & Cards networking event.

These morning mixers will provide you with a direct opportunity to meet other business professionals who understand the meaning and value of building mutually beneficial relationships.

The idea behind Coffee & Cards is that simple relationships can drive growth for your business and, in some cases, save your business.  Each registered attendee is asked to bring a colleague or associate so that the network is strong and not limited.  When a Chamber member RSVPs, they will be registered with a guest.  Your guest can be a Chamber member or not.  Non-Chamber members can attend as a guest only once.  Of course you can register as a solo attendee and choose not to bring a guest.

Panel Discussion: Should Government Require Paid Sick Leave?

paid sick leave image

Work Life, Home Life: Should Government Require Paid Leave?
Wednesday, May 12
8:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Theresa Lang Community & Student Center
Arnhold Hall
55 West 13th Street (btw 5th & 6th Aves), 2nd Floor

About 1.3 million working people in New York City have no paid sick leave, and pressure is mounting on employers to provide it. Local chambers of commerce predict the cost would be in the billions; labor advocates argue it is simply a matter of fairness--and the City Council has begun to move on legislation. In the national context of often inflexible work options and limited public spending on child care, are there plausible ways to improve family policies in the workplace? Or is it too much for business--and the economy--to bear?
