Events, Discounts, Resources
20 April 2010

Hello Members and Friends,

Tonight the Chamber is hosting a mixer with Community Board 4.  Please RSVP if you're interested in attending.  We hope to see you tonight between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at new Chamber member restaurant Las Chicas Locas.

The City Council re-introduced the Paid Sick Leave bill, INT 0097.  Below we have included a link to the bill and an update with regard to the changes made to it.  Hearings will be held in early May and will keep you informed so that you can make your voice heard.

Are you an S-Corp business?  If so, please let us know ASAP!  We have some updates on the pending changes to the laws that affect S-Corps and an opportunity to work with City Hall.

Our calendar is constantly growing, so if you have an idea for an event or a speaker based on a pressing local issue, send us an email.  We are always interested in your thoughts and ideas, and making the Chamber the best resource for you and your business.

Best,

Is Your Business an S-Corp?

Is your business an S-Corp?  Many of the city's smallest business are classified as S-Corps and currently bare a burden of double taxation.

Continuing the City Council's efforts to end double taxation on business owners, a proposed tax credit will exempt small retailers from the City's corporate tax.

Under the proposed changes, neighborhood retailers, who as S-Corporations are exempt from the Federal corporate income tax and whose tax liabilities under New York City's General Corporation tax are less than $3,400, would receive a tax credit equal to their tax liability, effectively zeroing-out the tax.  Those whose liabilities are a bit higher, up to $5,000, would receive a tax credit that would partially offset their tax liabilities.

If you meet any of the following criteria please
contact the Chamber.

 - You an individual who operates a retail business and sell g
oods (not services)?  Your business is predominantly brick and mortar, with the majority of sales coming from your shop, not your online sales.  If your businesses sells food, its for consumption off premises.

 - Are you a corporation (not a partnership or proprietorship) that is classified as an S-Corporation?

 - Are you a small business where all of the owners put together are taking in less than $200K from the business in profits and salaries?

Paid Sick Leave Bill Re-Introduced as INT 0097

With the backdrop of an unemployment rate exceeding the national average, City Council members heard at a public hearing on paid sick time legislation that businesses can and will move outside of NYC to more hospitable areas where they can grow and compete.

Businesses that stay will not only face tough competition from outside the city, but must also contend with growth-killing policies from our City Council. Jobs will be lost, hours reduced and wages lowered to pay for this misguided mandate.

Let us be clear, New York City businesses of every size support the right of workers to stay home without fear of retribution if they are sick.

Protections and guidelines are in place at the City, State and Federal level to ensure employees have the protections they need. The Federal government is looking at job creation and sick time bills too, let's wait on them to do their job before passing a job killing bill in NYC.

Keep NYC's job creation and growth economic engine running; don't enact a bad policy that will force businesses to downsize.  Tell the City Council to do the right thing...NYC needs job creation, not job killing legislation

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has yet to take an official position on this bill.  Email the Speaker and let her know how you feel about INT 0097!
