DCTS Ranks #1 in PA for Skills Achievement
DCTS achieved 94% success rate on the 2011 NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) examinations, the Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved end-of-program assessments. Out of 86 Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers in Pennsylvania, DCTS not only held the best success rate in the state, it also exceeded the " State Expected" rate, which is 75%. "Our administrative team and faculty were dedicated to making student achievement a priority and our amazing students rose to the occasion," said Mr. Ryan Coughlin, DCTS Folcroft Principal.
These comprehensive tests, given to graduating students as part of the completion of their CTE programs, measure student performance in their field. Technical high schools are held accountable for NOCTI in the same way high schools use PSSAs to measure academic performance. Because they are skills-driven however, NOCTI exams include both a written and practical examination, proctored by industry professionals. DCTS Administrative Director Dr. Philip Lachimia said, "The whole concept of rigor has become cultural within the schools. Everyone is 'on board' with school improvement and student success." For the past four years, DCTS has instituted data-driven teaching strategies to meet class and individual student needs and has seen student NOCTI performance rise each year from 53% in 2008 to 94% in 2011.
