I find it comforting to think of the rhythm of the liturgical year as a template for the cyclical nature of our lives. Just like life, the church year holds times of great celebration, times of intense sorrow, and loads of ordinary time. Our faith community has just ended weeks and weeks of celebratory time that began on Holy Thursday and ended with the feast day of Corpus Christi. Now we enter ordinary time, the color of which is green. We all need that kind of a breather, ordinary time, to lay back and take in the beauty of a tree awash in sunshine. As many of you know, my dear, ninety-five year old mom went to heaven in mid June and my soul mate Mike is making his way there as well. As I think about this time in my life, it seems anything but ordinary and yet being born and dying, and having many or few years in between those two events, are two of the most ordinary, common things that we human beings experience. Our lives take on the extraordinary as we let the light of Jesus shine through us, like sunlight through branches. Our love and concern for others is what, in the end, defines each of us. I thank you for the love and concern you have shown for our family as we walk these days of ordinary time.
May you find in the love of others--family, small community, neighbors--the beauty of the ordinary permeated by the love of God. Blessings,

Brand New Material for Small Church Communities:
Lifting Up Our Hearts to the Lord
You may or may not remember that changes to the Roman Missal will be implemented on the first Sunday of Advent. While the changes are not numerous, they will be noticeable. You may want to know the why and what of the changes and your small community is the ideal place to investigate and discuss the changes.
A new six-session faith sharing material Lifting Up Our Hearts to the Lord: Praying with the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, is now available from RENEW International. This resource will enable you to explore the history and to better understand the context and just what is being changed in the language of the Mass. To order the material for your small community call or email the SCC Office.

Missing Your Extended Family?
There are lots of folks in SCCs who don't have families close by. There are parents whose kids are grown and have moved far away, there are grandparents whose grandkids live in other cities. There are young families who have relocated here leaving parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents elsewhere. Lots of folks are missing the joy and benefit of extended family. While it is true that our SCCs very often fill the bill as extended family, sometimes we still don't have the age range that makes us really intergenerational. Some folks are longing for that mix of age and experience that benefits both young and mature alike. So if you're missing grandkids (either real or desired), or your little ones rarely get to see grandma and grandpa, maybe it's time to explore some "adoptive" relationships. If you are interested please contact Julia Gawrychowski to begin the conversation or call the SCC Office. THESE POSSIBLE NEW RELATIONSHIPS ARE BY NO MEANS INTENDED TO REPLACE YOUR SMALL CHURCH COMMUNITY. Back to Top |
School Libraries in Kenya by Pat Colfer

Hi, folks.......I write once again, hoping to impose upon your generosity for volunteering. Since Don and I returned from Kenya in late April we've been moving forward on the next levels of our SCOPE efforts (School Communities Offering Projects that Empower). We have slated libraries for 18 schools - no small goal as many of you know...and are planning another book sale to provide funds for shipping. So, yes, you guessed it, we need helpers to do a variety of jobs: sort both kid and adult books; clean the needy kid books; set up the displays for our quasi "Barnes and Noble" low price sale; be involved in the little cafe we hope to open as part of the whole book experience. If you can spare any time at all, we would be most grateful; this is a project far beyond what we can do ourselves. But the end result is so worth the time, energy spent, and sometimes the frustration. I'll list the details below - this is a summer need when a million things are going on, but, hey, if we never ask, then nothing would happen.....Thank you, folks - believe me, we are most grateful (and so are the school folks where libraries are installed!)
Warehouse Location: 9360 Federal Blvd. Regular warehouse hours: Mon/Wed/Fri..........10 AM to 3 PM
