Hi! It looks like Spring has finally arrived after such a long,
cold and snowy Winter. It has been a busy and productive winter for me.
Most of you know that I was in the Netherlands at the University of Utrecht at the beginning of February learning pituitary surgery from Dr. Bjorn
Meij which was fantastic. I also was able to get to the Veterinary Orthopedic
Society [http://www.vosdvm.org/] which is
a great continuing education seminar. Anyone interested in orthopedic surgery
should go - it really is good and it's a good group of people.
The Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association had a
night at the National Aquarium in Baltimore
that was really well attended - there is a report below.
At the University
of Pennsylvania, I am
involved in a research project that would look to record EEG continuously in
epileptic dogs. This is very interesting and I should be able to share more
information on this project very soon. I am bringing Dr. Meij to the University of Pennsylvania to help set up pituitary
surgery for dogs with hyperadrenocorticism. This may happen at the end of
April. More information to follow on that.
I have included a brief word on treating back disease
(slipped disks) in this newsletter in response to my article on treating
intervertebral disk disease in dogs in the Mar newsletter- thanks for
your interest and questions.
Finally, there are a bunch of CE opportunities in the area
over the next month. Please note them in the announcements. If you have
anything to add, please let me know.
Thanks again for all your support and interest. I couldn't
do this without you! Jay

When to ask for a referral? So vets and people always ask me WHEN to refer the back
dog...... that's a great question and unfortunately there's no pat answer. What
I could tell you is that knowing what kind of dog that you have as a patient,
the presenting complaints, and response to treatment certainly helps. We know
the typical clinical course that these guys are supposed to follow....

AACVMA- Night at the National Aquarium
Thanks to all who attended the AACVMA meeting at the NAIB. It was a huge success and a lot of fun. We had a behind the scenes tour with Dr. Whittaker and the dolphins. This was followed up by a great presentation of all the wonderful outreach work NAIB does in the community.
