Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for your interest and support of McDonnell
Veterinary Neurology Consulting Service. It has been just over a year since I
started the service and the response has been tremendous by clients, pets and
the primary care veterinarians (you!). I
have been amazed by the diversity of the cases that you have brought me in to
consult on. I hope to continue to provide a service that you appreciate and
strive to make it better in the coming years.
I will be launching a more streamlined consult request
procedure on the website in the next few months. I will be in touch regarding
these changes. Please let me know if you ever have a problem contacting me or
submitting a consult. I am nearly always available by my email, drjaymcd@gmail.com, that is directed to my
phone.
If you would like to discuss a case or potential referral,
please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working with you in the
future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jay McDonnell Check out www.drjaymcdonnell.com

Seizures, Potassium Bromide and Phenobarbital
Seizures are a common complaint in veterinary
medicine. While canine seizures may be caused by head trauma, brain tumors,
toxins, infections, birth defects and many other identifiable causes, the vast
majority of seizures in young (1-3 year old) dogs is idiopathic or genetic
epilepsy. Good management of canine epilepsy is possible in about 70-80% of
cases treated with either Phenobarbital (PB) or potassium bromide (KBr)
monotherapy.

The case of the falling goat
This is a case that was managed up at the University of
Pennsylvania New Bolton Center. Dr. Amy Johnson contacted the
Neurology-Neurosurgery Service at the MJ Ryan Veterinary Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania
after seeing Zoe, a goat that had fallen from a tree. Apparently the goat
climbed the tree and was having a grand old time one afternoon when the owners
spied it up there. Being concerned, they tried to rescue Zoe by placing a
ladder against the tree and climbing up to her.

MRI Now Available
We are able to provide magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) services to animals in the Annapolis and surrounding area. With its
excellent soft-tissue detail and three-dimensional reconstruction, MRI is one
of the most powerful imaging techniques uniquely suited for the central nervous
system. MRI is a safe, non-invasive and pain free way to evaluate structures
within the body. MRI utilizes a powerful
magnetic field, radio-frequency pulses and computer to produce detailed
pictures of internal body structures. MRI does not use ionizing radiation like
conventional radiographs (x-rays) or computerized tomography (CT).
