The Colorado Racing News The Monthly e-Newsletter of the ACA

July 2012

Greetings!

Dear Colorado Racing Community,

A Message on Progress

Over the past year, we have worked collaboratively with our members, officials, racers, promoters, host cities, the collegiate cycling conference, and USAC to integrate our cycling community into the national racing community.

At the same time that we have been working to accomplish this integration, we have implemented the use of a sophisticated timing system.  To this end, we have been working with D&L Sound to perfect the use of the ACA Timing System. When we purchased this system, we understood that the implementation would certainly not be seamless. The level of frustration in our cycling community, however, has grown over the last year. Please know that we as an organization feel this frustration - it is our goal to improve racing in Colorado, not spend our race days arguing with computers.

It is important to remember why the timing system was purchased:

1-      To score lapped riders and not pull these athletes. As a grassroots organization, it is our stated goal to let lapped riders continue.

2-     To score races more accurately and deeper in each field

3-     To provide quicker results at events

4-     To provide lap-time and split data which provides additional value to the racing experience

5-     To make judging less stressful, thereby making it easier to attract and retain officials

We are a community of racers, promoters, officials, and dedicated volunteers and staff that needs to be connected and working together. We cannot be fractured over the implementation of a timing tool.

The ACA continues to invest resources to support and improve bicycle racing in Colorado. One of the most pressing issues is the ability to generate accurate, timely race-day registration information. This is important no matter what tool is used to score an event. When registration is completed correctly, the ACA timing system can generate an accurate start list and therefore accurate race results. To address this issue, we have created and deployed (at no charge to promoters or racers) a race-day registration spreadsheet that validates member information. This means that we are working to eliminate errors before they affect the event's results. We continue to pursue a web-based, real-time race-day data entry system that we can share with our race promoters. This product is not currently available commercially, and we continue to explore the custom creation of this tool. Once we determine if this is fiscally possible, we will notify the community of our findings.

We understand your frustrations with results generation, and continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the timing system. The direction and policies of the organization must reflect our goal: to support our race promoters so that we all can enjoy great events. We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide our community with an outstanding sporting experience.

Thanks for reading and for supporting the ACA,

2012 John Stenner State Time Trial Championships

2012 State TT Podium

Nearly 400 racers enjoyed a great day of time trialling at the State Championships course near DIA.  40 and 20 kilometer courses decided the State titles for all 28 ACA categories.  The timing system delivered fast, accurate results at the race site and via email.

HUGE thanks to Ed Greivel, the Schwab Cycles Racing Team, Yvonne van Gent, and ACA Board members Rachel Scott, Susan Adamkovics, Clint Bickmore and Peter Ismert for making this such a fantastic event!

A week after the Mini Classic, we hosted the 2012 Junior Road Camp at the beautiful Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins. Nearly 70 juniors learned about training, safe riding, skills development, nutrition, and basic bike maintenance under the knowledgeable guidance of Jon Heidemann of Peak to Peak Training Systems.   A huge thank you to Jon, Clint Bickmore, Bruce Hecht, Dan Way, Marty Albe, Roy Denoon, Chris Johnson, CSU, and all who contributed to this fantastic weekend!

All this great stuff in our Junior Development Program contributes to active, healthy young people who understand setting and achieving goals, proper nutrition, bicycle safety, and have a strong sense of self-confidence.  In addition to these intangibles, our Program also helps to produce great athletic achievements, with stellar performances at the 2012 USA Cycling Junior National Road and Time Trial Championships.

Gate Wins Nats 2012

Podium performances were turned in by Kirsten Williams, Laurel Rathbun, Gage Hecht, Michael Dessau, Gregory Daniel, Chris Blevins, and Torin Bickmore.  Congratulations all!  We are very proud of you!
