The Colorado Racing News The Monthly e-Newsletter of the ACA

December 2011

Boulder Peak

Greetings!

Hello on a snowy December 1st!

The last month has seen remarkable changes for this great organization.

As I'm sure you're aware, the ACA Club Council voted last month to return the ACA to USACycling.  This decision ends 13 years of separation between our two organizations, and provides for the unification of road, cross and track cycling in Colorado and eastern Wyoming.

This is a time of great optimism and opportunity.  Rather than competing for the same promoters, events and members, we can work together to grow our sport.  The ACA will remain a separate non-profit business entity, and as such, we have the ability to determine our own staffing, programs, categories, event standards, points competitions and goals for competitive cycling in our area.

What changes will you see?  The primary change is your racing license, which will now be issued by USAC.  Your additional membership in the ACA will give you access to our great member benefits, such as eligibility in our Points Competitions, State Champion vests, communication via e-mail and e-newsletters, posting your club and business on the ACA website, lap times for races, great discounts from many of our partners, and our juniors can take advantage of the ACA's Junior Development Program, which will stay 100% intact.

We are working like mad to make this new partnership improve the race experience for all Colorado cyclists.  Examples are:

1- 2011 ACA cross results are being counted for USAC's cross rankings system which will be used at Cross Nationals.
2- USAC license holders can race in our remaining 2011 races without paying a one-day fee.
3- Remaining 2011 ACA races are listed on the USAC website.
4- The 2012 Colorado Mini Classic will have National Level designation in the USAC Calendar.
5- We are working with the USA Pro Cycling Challenge to bring exciting amateur events to the 2012 host cities (still to be announced).
6- We are working with USAC to help our promoters who wish to be considered for National Level designations.  These events include the Fort Collins Cycling Festival, the Superior Morgul Classic, and the Bob Cook/Mt. Evans Hill Climb.
7- We will have a stronger relationship with collegiate racing so that we can support these clubs and racers, and benefit from their participation in our events.
8- We are working with USAC to bring Cross Nationals to Colorado in 2014.
9- We continue to explore the ways in which we can work with the Colorado High School League in order to attract and retain more juniors.
10- In 2012, our Pro-1-2 fields will race at their traditionally crazy-fast pace, which improves not only this category, but the other senior groups and SM 35+.  Promoters can expect to see bigger, faster fields in the P-1-2 than this year.

Change can be difficult as we adapt to new realities, but it is through times like this that we can improve and grow.  The future looks very bight for cycling in Colorado, and as always, the ACA will deliver exceptional customer service, great events and Points Series, the nation's best Junior Development Program, and a commitment to continually improve bicycle racing in our area.
The ACA is more important than ever to local cycling, so please rejoin as a member in 2012.

We appreciate your support and patience while we sort out the details of this new partnership with USAC.  Thanks for reading, and see you at the races!

Chris

2011 Tommy D Turkey Day Junior Ride

Special Thanks:  Deidre Moynihan, DBC Events, Clint Bickmore, Clif Bar, and Stephanie, Tom, and the entire Danielson Family for Hosting Us!

Nearly 150 juniors and parents were hosted by the Danielson family on Thanksgiving Day, 2011 for the inaugural Tommy D Turkey Day Ride.  Kids aged 4-19 had a great day - and the parents too! The young ones took their strider bikes at full speed to the miniature Boulder Cup cross course that was set up on the Danielson yard, and the older kids enjoyed the beautiful weather and great roads north of Boulder, with each rider getting a chance to ride next to Tom.

ACA Partner 303Cycling was there, and created an excellent story on the day.  This was an incredible day for young riders in Colorado, and shows what can be accomplished when we combine the amazing resources that are here.

Thank you Tom and everyone for making such a special day for so many young riders!
