November 2011

Boulder Peak

Greetings!

Welcome to November!

What a great fall we've had so far - which in my opinion is the best season for riding.  A bit of chill in the air, a couple extra  layers, a great cup of coffee, the fitness earned from a year spent riding and racing - this is the essence of autumn.

The 2011 Cross season has been out of this world!  October had it all, from 100+ juniors per cross race to watching the nation's best do their thing here in Colorado.  The Halloween weekend was insane - I will never forget seeing World #1 Katie Compton at her best in Boulder.  October provided inspiration from all ends of the spectrum.

With yesterday's storm, and looking at the forecast, we've got some wicked storms on the way.  The days of dry, fast racing are over for a bit.  It's time to get a little nasty and push on those pedals just a bit harder.  Cross at its filthy best!

Behind the scenes, our talks with USAC have been proceeding with a renewed sense of possibility.  We will have a special Club Council Meeting on Friday, November 18th (6pm at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden) to determine the future of the ACA.  Steve Johnson from USACycling will attend and give a presentation to our club leaders.  Please watch the ACA site for the latest developments.

Thanks for reading, and see you at the races!

Chris

2011 Junior Cross Camp
Story by Bruce Whitesel and Kathy Judson

Special Thanks:  Alexander Dawson School, Alpha Bicycle Co, Clint Bickmore, Food Stuff Etc, mix1, Taggart Insurance, Ann Trombley and our great Parent Volunteers.

Wow!  How to you quickly describe the thrill and excitement of 100 plus kids eager to learn about cyclo cross?  How do you contain that much energy into words?

You can't - You have to experience it.

Camp was a great and it was a perfect day in Colorado. The weather was fantastic.  It was a splendid day in Boulder County!  Road camp it snows and cross camp we need a pool, but it is beautiful Colorado so there is never a bad day.

The kids endured a night of lectures where we hope they learned how to eat and pack a bag for a race and learned a few bike parts.  Then it was time to start winding down for a night of rest.  WInding down is an interesting concept for 80 boys and 20 plus girls.  It is fast and crazy fun, but by ten o'clock we had lights out.  Then the night of fun began.  Lights on and off at random times just to make you squirm.   Aren't we close to Halloween?

Then Bertha to wake the boys up.  Ha the girls were all ready up and getting ready for an awesome day.  Bertha the largest cowbell around greeted the boys to a wonderful greeting for a nice brisk run.  ON our run and stretches we were greeted by a wonderful morning with balloons in the distance and the Flatirons as majestic as ever.  The views at Dawson are spectacular and today was going to be a great day.  The running time made us realize why we ride bikes.  There were some comical styles out there but it was all in great fun.

After a lovely breakfast, we broke up into our groups.  The biggest group were the newest members to the great sport of cycling.  They were so fun to watch and teach as you forget all the stuff you have to learn.  The middle group was a good size group and they were at the ages where good old fashioned competition made them strive to do their best.  The oldest group definitely had some stuff on the line to prove in a fun fashion.  The sand pit was an endurance fest of who could get around that thing.  Come on it is like riding in the snow - Not.

After a great fun rest break and some nutritionally sound food remembering our previous nights lecture, we changed around a bit to get in all of our stations.  The newest members worked in 8 stations for a short time each.  They all had fun and kept moving.  The older groups got to play on other stations.  Break time! Can we shower yet???  Nope gotta build the race course.  OK.  Let's build a course.  Good practice for future race promoters as we tried to teach them early how to do it.  Now we can rest and shower and eat before duh ta duh - Garbage ball.  Hurry up everybody. Garbage ball is so much fun.  Hurry.

Stretching in the gym came upon us quickly and ahhh did it feel great to those overworked muscles.  Is it bedtime yet.  Nope not with 100 anxious kids who never run out of energy.  We counselors were getting pooped, but the energy of the kids kept us going.

Oh yeah free time before lights out.

The kids were more tired tonight after a great day of drills and races and Garbage ball.

Ahhhh Rest little eyes rest and some big guys in there too.

The day was incredible.

The Timing System for the 2011 Cross Season

The system is working really, really well!  Our biggest problem now is that not all racers are using their chips, which makes it really difficult to get the scoring correct in the middle of hectic race days.

All Cross Cup Events use the timing system - bring your chip!

If you have one bike, please attach your timing chip to the front of your bike with zip ties.  And pre-register for your race - save money, time, stress and make it easy on everyone.

Please note:  riders without chips, or chips that are attached incorrectly, will not see their preliminary results, will not see lap times and will not see their race times.  Plus you mess up lap times for everyone else.  Just bring you chip so we can all relax, ok?
