September 2011

Boulder Peak

Greetings!

What happened to August?!?  What a blur, but at least the kids are back in school!

From what I hear, there are two things on everyone's minds:  the start of the cross season, and the ongoing dialogue with USAC.

Cross:  It's time to get some dirt on your face!  Cross racing starts the first weekend after Labor Day, and continues through December.  Cross has become an amazing second season for the ACA, and we are incredibly excited about the next four months.  There are weekly training rides going on in Boulder, Denver and Golden to get you up to speed.  Are you a masters cross racer?  Lee Waldman is writing about the masters cross experience, and needs your inputPlease see the ACA Calendar for the most up-to-date information on the cross season, including a new mid-week series in Golden.

Juniors and Cross:  The 2011 Junior Cross Camp will be held the weekend of October 1 & 2 at the Dawson School near Lafayette.  Price will be $50 for the weekend, which includes food, lodging, coaching, mix1 products, giveaways, and tons of fun!  Registration will open on Madsync this week.

A rapidly growing part of the racing community is the Colorado High School Cycling League.  We have a great respect for the goals, staff, and participants of the CHSCL, and welcome their members at our events.  The ACA honors CHSCL licenses, so these kids race free in junior categories at ACA events.  Please note:  in order to be counted for ACA points competitions (such as Cross Cup), riders must be current ACA members.

The Timing System for the 2011 Cross Season:  All Cross Cup Events (which start October 1 in Frisco) will use the timing system.  In preparation, we will double-check chips and distribute ankle-straps (which hold your chip) at six September events:

Lookout Cross (Golden, September 11)
Back to Basics Cross Series (Golden, September 14, 21 & 28)

Boulder Racing's Valmont (Boulder, September 17)

Boulder Racing's Xilinx (Longmont, September 24)

Please bring your chips if you are racing at these events!  You cannot get your strap without bringing your chip.

USAC:  The ACA has proceeded very methodically in our dialogue with and regarding USAC.  One month ago, we created and distributed our position statement, financial information, comparison of services, and a table that shows the composition of our membership.  This got the conversation buzzing - and then Steve Johnson (CEO of USAC) shared the USAC position - which generated even more buzz.  All of this information is publicly available on 303cycling.com.

Our club survey went out this week (we waited until after the Big Race was over).  Clubs, please complete your survey by September 10, 2011.  In two weeks, we will have hard data that represents the thoughts of our clubs.  Without this information, any action on our part would be premature and based on input from a small sample.  After we compile the survey results, we will be able to chart a course that is beneficial to the ACA as a whole.  The ACA Board of Directors will make recommendations to our clubs based on the results of this survey.  Please note that any change to the ACA's structure or bylaws needs to be voted on by the clubs at either the 2011 Annual Meeting (held in December) or a meeting called specifically to discuss this topic.

Please watch the ACA website, Facebook, twitter, and our weekly updates for the latest in ACA happenings, and as always, you can find all the race details on the ACA event calendar.   Thanks for sharing this e-newsletter with your friends and family.

Clubs in Bad Standing

The ACA will host two awards parties for the 2011 season.  These events are not to be missed - we'll have great food and drinks, raffles for amazing prizes, and awards presentations to recognize the achievements of our friends and competitors.

On September 17th, we will hold the 2011 Road Awards Party from 6-9pm at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in Golden.  On February 4, 2012, we will hold the 2011 Cross Awards Party from 6-9pm at the same location.   Thanks to Kathy Judson of IC3 for her incredible volunteer work with these events!
