I support mentoring | |
Dear
Big Brothers Big Sisters- Pikes Peak fund development team has experienced a tremendous first half of the year and we plan to keep the momentum going! We successfully launched the BBBS-PP Associate Board, hired an AmeriCorps VISTA member, matched a $40,000 challenge grant from T. Boone Pickens, and hosted our first ever web based campaign entitled the "Big Give." I would like to thank our loyal supporters for believing in BBBS-PP and continuing to give even in these troubling economic times. We know that you could have chosen from thousands of non-profits and we are thankful that you chose us. 2009 is not over yet and we will need your support more than ever! The second half of the year will bring our 2nd Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Week in which we will unveil our new brand, followed by our 27th Annual Bowl for Kids' Sake event. Mr. Biggs will be hosting our event this October. There are still opportunities for corporate sponsorships and organizing teams. Please consider making a donation and helping BBBS-PP end the year strong. Big Brothers Big Sisters-Pikes Peak will continue to forge along and we hope that you will continue with us. For a full list of our supporters or to find out how you can join please visit www.BigLittleColorado.org/pikespeak. Be Big. Sincerely, Danielle L. Summerville Manager of Fund Development

Match Highlight Big Brother Matt & Little Brother Justin
Justin has been matched with Matt since August 18, 2008, and the match has been going well since the beginning. Justin is in 8th grade and had not been doing extremely well in school in years past. On his most recent report card however, Justin says he received straight A's! I asked him why he feels he did so well, and he directly attributed his success to words that he received from his mentor, "If you want to do something cool in life, you have to do well in school first." Matt explained to him that colleges look at grades as early as 8th grade. Justin took these words to heart and is planning on being successful in school from here on out. Justin also says that having Matt as a mentor encourages him to behave better overall. Mentoring works!

Meet the Staff Sharyn Brisson
Big Brothers Big Sisters-Pikes Peak is proud to introduce you to Sharyn Brisson, match support specialist and a big sister with BBBS-PP for nearly 3 years. Thank you Sharyn for your undying passion in putting mentors into children's lives.
Q: Why Big Brothers Big Sisters-Pikes Peak?
A: When I was a junior in high school a representative from Big Brothers Big Sisters came to my interior design class and spoke with us about mentoring a "little. I decided this is something I would be good at after much thought and conversations with my family. I applied to be a big sister and was matched in the school based program. My first little was a boy named Nicholas and the following year was a little girl named Dominique. It was a wonderful experience. Since then, I always have had a special place in my heart for BBBS. When I graduated from college and saw the position at BBBS- PP, I didn't hesitate to apply. I know mentoring works and I couldn't wait to be involved.
Q: Who was your mentor when you were growing up?
A: I was blessed to grow up with many adult role models. Within my church there were so many youth workers that invested their time in me. One in particular was Jen Gabrielson. She was always there to listen and encourage me when I was going through difficult times. She would also just have fun and spend time with me. She would have me over to her apartment or take me out for ice cream. I looked up to her so much and felt she was someone who truly cared and I could trust with everything.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in the community?
A: I love to be outside!! I enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, snowboarding and running. Spending time with my husband, family and friends is always on the top of my priority list. Going to movies, watching plays or musicals, and finding the best Thai restaurants in the area are just a few of my favorite things to do in the community.
