Dr. Kelli Stajduhar, Associate Professor at the University of Victoria, New Investigator of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Scholar of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research opened the Symposium with an insightful Key-Note address titled: "Looking forward, Looking back: What history can teach us about educating nurses in the care of the dying". Participants reflected on strategies for integrating the CASN PEOLC Entry-to-Practice Competencies and Indicators for Registered Nurses into nursing curricula based on three different curriculum model approaches. PEOLC teaching and learning resources were presented and included: an online toolkit, a video on what health care professionals need to know about caring for a PEOLC patient, and a story-based learning faculty guide. The video launch of "A Story About Care," a moving portrayal of a family's lived experience, was heart-felt and especially well received by participants. Next steps include promoting the continued integration of the PEOLC competencies and indicators into nursing curricula across Canada. |
