Palliative and End-of-Life Care National Stakeholder Symposium

Nursing educators across the country met in Toronto, Ontario on February 23rd Cynthia Baker with keynote speakerand 24th to discuss the very important area of nursing care: palliative and end-of-life care (PEOLC). Dr. Kelli Stajduhar, Associate Professor at the University of Victoria, New Investigator of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Scholar of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research opened the Symposium with an insightful Key-Note address titled: "Looking forward, Looking back: What history can teach us about educating nurses in the care of the dying". Participants reflected on strategies for integrating the CASN PEOLC Entry-to-Practice Competencies and Indicators for Registered Nurses into nursing curricula based on three different curriculum model approaches. PEOLC teaching and learning resources were presented and included: an online toolkit, a video on what health care professionals need to know about caring for a PEOLC patient, and a story-based learning faculty guide. The video launch of "A Story About Care," a moving portrayal of a family's lived experience, was heart-felt and especially well received by participants. Next steps include promoting the continued integration of the PEOLC competencies and indicators into nursing curricula across Canada.

Nursing Inquiry: Critical Perspectives on Healthcare Practice and Policy - Call for papers on IDEAS WITH IMPACT

An upcoming special issue of Nursing Inquiry to celebrate the launch of the 20th edition will be devoted to publishing original manuscripts commenting on the ideas that have shaped the discipline of Nursing and continue to have influence today. Beyond the various ratings and rankings by which we commonly evaluate the impact of published work, knowledge development in the discipline has been catalyzed by important ideas whose impact is somewhat more difficult to "measure" but is strongly felt nonetheless. Contributions are sought that take up some of these "game changing" ideas, examining their origins and influence, and reflecting on the manner in which they have contributed to the evolution of scholarship by and about nursing and health care. Authors are invited to share their perspectives as to the ideas that have made our discipline's scholarship what it is today.  More...

Canadian Patient Safety Institute-Medication Reconciliation

Clear communications about medication information is a critical component of the delivery of safe care. Medication reconciliation (MedRec) is a formal process in which healthcare providers work with patients and families to ensure accurate and comprehensive medication information is communicated consistently across transitions of care. The Canadian Patient Safety Institute in partnership with ISMP Canada have launched a National MedRec Strategy to support healthcare organizations in implementing MedRec. Part of the work of this partnership has been the creation of a consensus statement that has been endorsed by ten major healthcare organizations including the Canadian Nurses Association, the Canadian Medical Association, and Accreditation Canada and others.
