2011 MNLA Award for Commercial Landscape Installation
Trollwood Performing Arts Center Project Manager: Scott Frampton
We are proud to announce that Landscape Renovations has been awarded a 2011 Merit Award for Commercial Landscape Installation by the MNLA at the Northern Green Expo this past week. The project receiving the award is the amphitheater Trollwood Performing Arts Center.
In the fall of 2008, Landscape Renovations' crews completed work on the new amphitheater at Trollwood Performing Arts School (TPAS) in Moorhead, MN. The amphitheater, which seats more than 3,000 people, will be used for musical and theatrical performances put on by students of the TPAS and entertainers from across the nation. The TPAS is a program of the Fargo Public schools and "is a unique youth development organization committed to providing high quality performing arts education, exceptional community entertainment, and activities that promote appreciation for cultural diversity." Many of the graduates are well known in both film and Broadway.
The project took nearly 7000 hours to complete and more than 300 tons of Chilton stone to build the m any ranks of seating and stairs. The dry stacked walls that make up the seats in the amphitheater are placed over 750 tons of gravel base and back fill. The drain tile system beneath the surface of the amphitheater is about a half of a mile long.

Winter Reminders A few tips and tricks to help your landscape through the long winter
- Keep deicing salt use to a minimum, especially near planting beds and turf. Deicing salts damage soil structure and cause toxic soil conditions where they run off into beds and turf.
- Do not use deicing salt on pavers or natural stone. The salt mixes with water creating a solution that can seep into the pores of natural stone and concrete paving. When the solution freezes and expands, the stone is cracked and damaged permanently.
- Keep an eye out for rodent, rabbit, and deer activity around your planting beds. These animals can cause major damage in a hurry, so do not wait if any sign of damage is occurring.
- To protect plants from rabbits, fencing can be placed right in the snow and should be at least two feet tall, with a one-inch mesh. Secure fencing with stakes and bury it a few inches in the snow to prevent rabbits going underneath the fence.
- Mid to late winter is an excellent time to prune some trees such as apples, crabapples, and oaks. These trees are very susceptible to disease in the warmer months, so winter pruning is best.
