Greetings dear Reader!

Like most Americans, I want to eat a healthier diet and lose some weight in 2011.  This has been on my resolution list every year for the past ummm...40 years....and I still haven't quite gotten there.  So, what's the problem?

After reading lots and lots of stuff about weight loss and healthy eating, I came across a couple of gems that I wanted to share with you.  The theme of both is setting small, achievable goals for yourself, instead of, no pun intended, biting off more than you can chew.

The first involves the recommendation about eating 5 to 7 fruits and vegetables every day.  Do you know how many people don't do this?  About 24%.  The best advice I've read about it is this:  If you want to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables, start by committing to eating two cups of greens and one piece of fruit a day.  Any normal sized salad has at least two cups of greens and one piece of fruit a day?  Well, no pun intended, but that's a piece of cake.  After you achieve this achievable goal, you can start to add more of these healthy foods to your diet, gradually working your way toward the goal of 5 to 7 per day. 

And, the second helpful thing that I've found is this book:  Just 10 Pounds.  If you're like me, you dream of double digit weight loss, dropping multiple sizes, looking like someone who is a size zero.  Having these dream goals has never really helped me to realize much of a weight loss.  I just end up getting discouraged and dropping back into my old habits.  That's where Just 10 Pounds comes in....the idea is to set an achievable weight loss goal for yourself (10 pounds) and then build upon it.  This book also explores the underlying emotional causes of overeating and gives tips for overcoming them.  I haven't finished it yet and I certainly don't think it's a magic bullet, but it has given me a new perspective about losing weight.
