Greetings!

I had truly hoped this email wouldn't be necessary. but I should have known better. One thing I have learned in 25 years of marriage to a grower: Farmers' Superstitions about weather almost always hold true! The one that prompts this email is the one that says we are not out of the woods as far as frost goes until the full moon of February. This year it falls on the last possible day, the 28th! And tonight we are gonna feel another Arctic blast--just as I was about to cave into my itchiness to prune and feed! But even though I have been good about restraining myself, Mother Nature herself has led her botanical children astray! These past few weeks we have had warm enough evenings, and some near 80 days--thus enticing the tender emergence of green growth through out my garden. Just as I was beginning to think a flurry of feed might be in order, Mother was dumping a 24-inch flurry of white on the mid-Atlantic states! And now that blast is making its way to us. Current predictions are in the mid-to-low thirties for tonight (actually tomorrow pre-dawn). So if you have something really special that you have been nursing along through the post-January recovery, be sure to get it covered before bedtime tonight! Remember frost damage can occur at 38 degrees-especially on tender new growth. Watch your water now-cold windy air has severe drying effects, but keep in mind that in cooler temperatures a plant's water needs are diminished. And again, I have to recommend SUPERthrive, a fabulous product that will help you stave off death of a severely stressed plant.
As far as your own stress (if your like me it's building with every day you are denied dirt under your nails) check out some of the classes we are offering and Garden Festivals we will be participating in. Break a sprig of Rosemary between your fingers and inhale deeply. Rosemary being for remembrance and all it should let your mind drift back to how you spent February up north. . . You will have to admit, this is still much better!

Can't wait to shake your muddy hand!

snowy egret at the lake Don't Miss Out on this Fantastic Field Trip to Selby Gardens, Rare Plant Nursery in Sarasota

There are still a few seats left

You have heard me talking about this field trip for over a month now, so you know what it entails. You know we are going to travel across the scenic agricultural lands of the central part of our State, marvel at beautiful flora and fauna (I spied a Bald Eagle on the way across in January and snapped the shot of this snowy egret at Lake O in December).  And that is before we even arrive at our first stop! A visit to the amazing TropiFlora Nursery (and yes, you can shop-we are pulling a trailer) followed by lunch and a guided tour at the fascinating Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Did you ever wonder what they do with those cool and unusual plants that get confiscated when travelers attempt to bring them into the country illegally? They go to Selby! That is why Selby boasts a collection or rare epiphytes that can not be seen elsewhere in the USA. We will round out the day with dinner at the famous Lightsey's Restaurant in Okeechobee. All of this--transportation, meals, tours and gratuities-- for just $99 per person. What you haven't heard yet is what an awesome group of people we have going! Amazing experts in orchids and bromeliads will be amongst our ranks. Fabulously fun garden people whose enthusiasm for beauty will ignite your soul. I am so thrilled that some of most favorite garden friends are signed up to go. Won't you consider coming along?

Saturday, February 20th. 8am to 8:30pm.

birdhouse Bliss is the Bomb!
Don't miss the next Garden Bliss,
 February 25th, 5:30 pm

Ready to be inspired? You MUST come to our next Bliss. Maybe you read about it in last month's Stuart News article by Marilyn Bauer. This is the monthly event we hold so we can all have a little fun in the evening garden, enjoy each other's company, and learn a little something. This month we are focusing on creating a Winter Haven in your back yard for migrating birds and other wild life.  We are thrilled to welcome Nick Casella as he provides us with a demonstration of just which type of Bird House to install to attract different types of birds. Nick will also share shelters for bees and butterflies too.  Plus I will have some tips on which plants to include in your Winter Haven to make our winged visitors most appreciative!

Never a Bliss goes by with out prizes and presents, refreshments and friends. . . all while immersed in the beauty of the garden. Like I said--it's the bomb!

ps Don't forget to bring a friend who has never been--there will be a special gift for you both!
