Greetings!
I had truly hoped this email wouldn't be necessary. but I should have known better. One thing I have learned in 25 years of marriage to a grower: Farmers' Superstitions about weather almost always hold true! The one that prompts this email is the one that says we are not out of the woods as far as frost goes until the full moon of February. This year it falls on the last possible day, the 28th! And tonight we are gonna feel another Arctic blast--just as I was about to cave into my itchiness to prune and feed! But even though I have been good about restraining myself, Mother Nature herself has led her botanical children astray! These past few weeks we have had warm enough evenings, and some near 80 days--thus enticing the tender emergence of green growth through out my garden. Just as I was beginning to think a flurry of feed might be in order, Mother was dumping a 24-inch flurry of white on the mid-Atlantic states! And now that blast is making its way to us. Current predictions are in the mid-to-low thirties for tonight (actually tomorrow pre-dawn). So if you have something really special that you have been nursing along through the post-January recovery, be sure to get it covered before bedtime tonight! Remember frost damage can occur at 38 degrees-especially on tender new growth. Watch your water now-cold windy air has severe drying effects, but keep in mind that in cooler temperatures a plant's water needs are diminished. And again, I have to recommend SUPERthrive, a fabulous product that will help you stave off death of a severely stressed plant.
As far as your own stress (if your like me it's building with every day you are denied dirt under your nails) check out some of the classes we are offering and Garden Festivals we will be participating in. Break a sprig of Rosemary between your fingers and inhale deeply. Rosemary being for remembrance and all it should let your mind drift back to how you spent February up north. . . You will have to admit, this is still much better!
Can't wait to shake your muddy hand!
