| Rotary Definition | |
Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world. |
| Our Mission | |
"Doing good in the World is more than a motto. It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder. It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have. Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary. It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective. Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

PROGRAM: Eleanor Balson & Debbie Zobrist, Bees and Beekeeping | | |
Beekeepers enjoy a lot of benefits from their hobby and/or occupation. They are able to enjoy the outdoors, get exercise, produce a food source, develop bravery, make new friends and observe the wonder of nature's design.
Bees know their job from birth. The first job they have is to carry debris out of the hive. As they get older, they take nectar/pollen to the baby bees. They collect nectar/pollen and as older bees, act as scouts to find new homes and flower sources.
The Queen Bee is who is in charge in the hive. Hives can oust the Queen Bee for a new Queen. When this happens, the old Queen leaves the hive, taking half of the hive bees with her. This can be what is happening when swarms of bees are seen.
Bees communicate through a "dance" and also through smells. They navigate nectar/pollen via 170 odor receptors. Bees have been around for about 60 million years. Bees can fly 500 miles in a lifetime. They visit 50-100 flowers. Their wings beat 200 times per second, which is why they buzz.
The lifespan of a bee varies depending on the work load given to the bee and the time of year. The Queen can live for up to five years.
While there is a need to be conscience of our environment and how we affect that environment, the "Disappearing Honey Bees" is more of a slogan than truth. In 2011, there were 1815 registered beekeepers. The bees in Illinois are healthy and growing strong.
Those interested in becoming beekeepers can choose from different aspects to get involved. Services to pursue include honey production, selling bees, pollination, and bee removal.
Anyone with hives must register them with the Illinois Department of Agriculture. |
