Rotary Definition

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build good will and peace in the world.

Our Mission

"Doing good in the World is more than a motto.  It is our goal, our mission, and our reminder.  It expresses in the clearest terms why we have a Foundation, and it challenges us to reach as far as we can to do the most good possible with everything we have.  Our Foundation exisits to support the good that we can do through Rotary.  It expands our reach, increases our strength, and makes our service more powerful and more effective.  Because of our Foundation we can, very simple, do more of our Rotary work."

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The Swedish GSE team will be picked up in Springfield on 4/27 at noon and be taken to their respective host families around 1:30. Our host families are Wayne Steiner, Tom Hill, Floyd and Eunice Rogier, and Maura Donnelly. We'll let them get settled in and then we'll leave Highland around 3 to take them to dinner and the Cardinals game. Maura Donnelly asked the host families and some committee members to stay after the meeting so they could further plan Saturday and Sunday's plans.
  • The recipient of the Rotary scholarship has been chosen. Bob Luitjohan was willing to attend the awards ceremony and present the check on May 14th.
  • Maura Donnelly left handouts on the tables of an email she received with an offer to purchase "Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary" book written by Fred Carvin, a past district governor of district 7190. If you are interested, please take the handouts or talk to Maura.

PROGRAM: Lynette Schuepbach, Highland Arts Council

The Highland Arts Council works to bring artists to the Highland community and to support artists in town. They support events like Art in the Park, Street Art Festival, Hard Road Theater, exhibits and art residencies at the high school.

Art in the Park will be held Oct 12-14, 2012 this year. There is a pre-sale night on Friday and the main event is held on Saturday and Sunday. They have over 70 artisits in 12 categories and give away $10,500 in prizes. The event not only features art, but also kids activities, Dueling Desserts, a kids' art gallery and raffle. They are looking for volunteers to help with this event.

Another event they support is Street Art Festival, where artists create chalk creations on the street. The event also features kids activities and an artist fair, where artists can have a booth for free.

The Highland Arts Council gives money to support Hard Road Theater and also sets up Art Affairs, which have been featured twice at the home of Dennis and Paula Calvert and once at the Highland Masonic Lodge. They also have an art exhibit at Pop Pop's and brought in an artist for the art residency at Highland High School.
